EGR VALVE Malfunction

Hey,
Im getting an Egr code thats irritating me. I took out my cats and the backpressure is messin around with my egr valve.... (I think.... alot of people told me this, but I dont know for sure). I dont want to go out and get another valve, Actually I wanna just block it off or get rid of it, whats the smartest thing to do?

A TTT in 19 minutes is bad ettiquette on this forum (24hrs is the general rule), plus you gave no info about your car (like year) for anyone to help you.

I guess everyone spoiled you.

OBD-II cars like your 1996 can get unhappy with backpressure changes. If you want to get rid of it, you can have it programmed out to keep the SES off. You can then get block off plates or just disconnect the vacuum source and leave it alone.

How are you getting by with no cats in California?

Just passed smog 2 weeks ago and I took the cats off the same day

Also, you said I can have it programmed out.... whats an alternative way to get the ses light out of the way? Will the block off or vacuum disconnection make it go away?

Programming it out is about the only viable way to do it. Any time the pcm turns the EGR on, it will try to verify that it is working. If it does not detect the correct conditions, it will throw a code.

I have heard of another alternative for fooling the pcm, but it requires some odd parts and wiring. Not nearly as "neat" as having it programmed out.
