Educate me on rear end gear oil....
Educate me on rear end gear oil....
I know absolutely nothing about gear oil, additives, selection, best type, brand prefrence etc.
Could someone fill me in with all they know?
I plan on changing mine soon and wanted to have a good background on it before I went and made a decision.
Isnt there a type that is good for rearend shock too?

not that i "know" anything about htis really, or which is best, but when i change mine i just go to the gm dealership and buy it. 2 bottles of the oil and one bottle of the additive. you could go synthetic if you wanted to. thats it really.
Mobil 1 synthetic and 1 bottle GM additive.
The only synthetic I run in my car, I would run syn in the motor but I have to many miles.
I have been running the same lube in the rear end since the gear swap was done and a couple days ago I changed it and fixed a gasket leak and the gears looked excellent.

If you have an Auburn posi, do NOT use synthetic fluid.
2.) What kind of oil should be used with an Auburn differential?
It is important when installing Auburn differentials that a high quality, non-synthetic 80w90 GL-5 oil, treated with GM or Ford limited-slip additive (also known as friction modifier) be used. Three ounces of additive will treat one quart of oil.

I'm using no name gear oil in my Moser along with GM additive. I change it every year whether it needs it or not. This is my third season racing and driving on the 12 bolt with no problems so far.

Got rid of the synthetic and now all is fine. Good in engines, not in trannies and rears.

This has been a "no laugh" day up til this thread.... thanks.

Yep, I use RP in everything... always have and always will. And my past stuff has been pretty brutal on parts.
