Arrow Edlebrock Headers

I recently got a free set of edlebrock TES headers and a y pipe for free. My friend thinks I should ditch those and buy jet hots because the edlebrocks are worthless in his opinion. I am a college student so money is an issue. To me I would much rather put the several hundred dollars spent upgrading to long tubes purchasing a cam and a stall. How fast have you guys gone on edlebrock headers? Would they flow fine with a 503 cam or something of that sort?

Thanks!

Thier decent headers if your not interested in going to wild and aren't serious into racing.

Re: Edlebrock Headers

I think they would be an ok header if you didn't plan on going much past just bolt ons. If you have future plans of heads and cam i'd ditch them. I've heard plug access is horrible with them.

Also, what are your emissions regulations like? Long tubes are easier said than done in emissions controlled states, trust me I know.

Re: Edlebrock Headers

edelbrock's aren't as bad as they're made out to be, the trick is to have a custom y-pipe made so it doesnt' loop over to the pass. side, instead take it straight back and join at the rear of the tranny like long tube setups do. properly done they will flow well.

plug access does suck though, for the #5 you'll need a cheap short spark plug socket with a hex on it so you can put a wrench on the socket to tighten the plug, it's the only way to get several of them. 5's the worst though.

Re: Edlebrock Headers

if your a bolt on car and maybe a hotcam kit in your future go with the edelbrock headers i had them with that set up. 337rwhp, but like a couple people already said, when i changed cams and had my heads done i switched to jet hot long tubes.

Re: Edlebrock Headers

Thanks guys for all your imput, keep them coming. I plan on a 503 cam or something in that area. Nothing too big, and i plan on keeping the heads stock for a long time. I do have emissions in my state.

I plan on having the edlebrock headers, the y pipe that came with them with 2 gutted cats on it, then full 3 inch exhaust back including loudmouth catback.

I am still debating putting a magnaflow (carsound) cat on it due to loudnes and emissions.

The y-pipe has some rust spots should i paint that with the 1,200 header paint also?

I plan on doing OTVC wires, do I need to be concerned with anything else burining due to heat?

You only have 2 02 Sensors in an OBD-1 correct?

After searching I plan on using ARP stage 8 header bolts since they seem to be very popular.... What gasket should I use?

Re: Edlebrock Headers

Good cheap shorties. Plug access is not that bad. They are on a thin side, if possible, get them coated.

Re: Edlebrock Headers

Anything is better than stock manifolds. Definitely get them coated, call up Jet Hot and find out what the price will be. Remember to mention you're a camaroz28.com member, that was good for 20% off when I got my headers done.

Re: Edlebrock Headers

No headers are "worthless" on a LT1..any is a big improvement...You'll yield more power from the Lts (probably another 10 hp) but thats your decision..

If you are that worried about emissions, then it is probably worth it to run a cat. The carsounds aren't that expensive anyhow.

As for stuff burning due to heat, you will have to give your car a very thorough inspection before starting it up making sure all wires are properly secured away from the headers.

I didn't know ARP had a "stage 8" header bolt. There is an actual brand called Stage 8 that makes locking header bolts, and then there is ARP, that to my knowledge, makes header bolts but they do not lock. I at first was running the ARP bolts, I pitched them and ran the bolts that Pacesetter provided me. This is because the ARP bolts had only 3/4 thread pattern and the Pacesetters had a full inch. The Pacesetter just felt like they were gripping the head better.

As for gaskets, I ran the Fel-Pro 1406 header gaskets. Only 20.00 from Summit. I also applied a thin coat of copper adhesive spray to both sides of the gaskets to create a good seal. No problems to report with that.

Re: Edlebrock Headers

i have them on my car and they are ok i like how they sound and i only have trouble changing the number 5 plug. also they creat alot of heat i am going to have mine coated this winter when i park it becouse there is just to much heat under the hood. also the paint will not hold up i had it on mine it only lasted about 5 min. they are the last thing i did to my car and they helped out alot but i was supercharged with stock manafolds anything was going to help!!! the resion i went with them is becouse i wanted to keep all the emisions and the price was right. also i dont plan on going any further with performance so they do well for me

Re: Edlebrock Headers

yeah, ceramic coating is pretty much a must on our cars, not much clearance around the headers.......watch your brake lines too! you don't want those heating up, dont' be scared to use heat sheilding products if they aren't coated.
