Dual exhaust... OUT THE BACK!! Everyone inside!

Hey guys, I have true duals on my car now, they dump right before the axle. I want to move the mufflers out from underneath so I can get some more ground clearance, and the dumps are a little too radical for my neighbors. Going out the back on the passenger side is a piece of cake. The drivers side is a bit more complicated. Fooling around with some flexible tubing, I've discovered that there is room on the drivers side if you go over the panhard bar, and under the upper support. However, if you go over a large bump it seems that it would hit. This is where I need help. If you were to remove the upper panhard rod, and sort of create a notch there and reinforce it, do you think this would work? Post your ideas here!

I dont really have any comments on the matter. I fought for weeks in my head before I bought my catback on whether to do true duals and there are no real profound benefits. So I have my nice 3" Hooker Catback that I always get great comments on not to mention I can never get vetts to race me anymore.

I suppose that could work, if you could reinforce it enough. I alwyays wondered why there is no pan-hard type bar made for that support (out of tubing). That would give you extra clearance, and would probably be even stronger than the stock piece.

I have a friend who runs a machine shop out of his basement, the guy is amazing he can make pretty much anything. I might try and make a new bar, but I would really prefer to use the stock one and modify it. If you look at it, its a piece of U-channeled steel. If the channel could be notched, and reinforced at the bottom of the U.... I really need to post a pic or something... Do you guys think it would work? Like I mentioned, I already have duals and I love them, I just want them out the back now.

Take a look here that's how this one is done.

Dual Exhaust - Modified Support Bar

Here is another one that has it between the two bars.

When you direct the pipes over the pan hard bar, if you hit a bump or dip hard, will the pipes hit the bar, or will the pipes hit the bottom of the car? It just kind of seems like it might from the pics...

i just went 3" all the way back with an X and two bullets, then under the rear end out the back (sort of like a corvette is what the muffler guy said) with two semmetrical pipes out the back like a 2001 SS except 3". it looks and sounds crazy when people are behind me(which has been a lot lately ). i havent hit anywhere except for the lowest point which is a bend for the drivers side trans support thingy. Other than that its been fine. thanks Tony

Ill try to get pics some time..kinda hard with no dig. camera though

What would happen if one of the sides was longer than the other? Like if I ran them both over on the pass. side, then ran the drivers side back over? Would it cause a flow problem or anything with the addition of 2-3 feet of piping on the one side?

Let me get this straight, you put your pipes under the rear axle, and the shop did this? You should never put pipes under the axle cause if need to lift the rear half of the car, like a flat tire the rear end will come down on top of the exhaust. I suppose you could always just place the jack under the rear axle if you need to change a tire, I'm just surprised a shop would do this. Pics please!

A buddy of mine has his run under the axle and it clears when jacked up.

I too, am wondering how this would work/sound? You think it would sound different on the drivers side because the exhaust has to travel so much farther on that side to reach the exit. Anyone have clips on how this set-up sounds?

How far did he jack the car up? When I was frustratd trying to put my true duals over the axle, grabbed the pipes in anger and inverted them, just to see if by some luck or miracle it would work under, well I was able to jack up the back, but only to a small degree, there was no way of changinga tire , unless the pips were almost hitting the ground. Are you sure your buddy doesn't jack from the axle itself? I just can't understand how it could be had without problems. There is a reason you've never seen cars from the factory with exhaust this way!
