DTC 42 in a friend's 95 Z
DTC 42 in a friend's 95 Z
We're at a loss.
DTC 42, we have the factory manual, but the actual diagnostic chain points to "intermittent", so the troubleshooting steps do not apply as the car runs.
The car will fun for about 10 minutes and then sputter, backfire, and pretty much just run like garbage.
He has replaced the ICM and coil like many others, with no change.
I checked the block ground for him from the ICM, that is OK. Disconnected the O2's for grins, no help.
It cools off for half an hour and it runs ok for a minute once it starts up, but then it starts running like garbage again.
I know that this doesn't directly relate to an opti problem, but this post:
http://web.camaross.com/forums/showt...&highlight=dtc
mentions two people who have the same symptoms saying it was their opti.
Last two things two replace are the PCM and the opti I guess... point to opti based off this. Opti has 5k miles, almost all hard miles in a cc306 heads/cam car.
Everyone that posts about this problem never seems to come back with a resolution reply. I hate that.

Re: DTC 42 in a friend's 95 Z
42 is the white wire going from the Black PCM connector pin 5 to the ICM. This wire is either open or shorted to ground. It should carry a signal that is 1 to 4 Volts AC.
You should splice in a replacement near each end of the wire. Then reset the code and see if it returns.
