driveshaft tears off from rear end wtf!!!
driveshaft tears off from rear end wtf!!!
I though It was my tranny, but Upon inspection under the car, I found the my driveshaft is dragging on the ground, what would cause the driveshaft to break from the rear end?
I was on the freeway cruising @ 100 in the carpool, then suddenly the tranny starts makin hella noise and the A4 shifter was doing a square dance. Damn I hate this car, This is my last GM SPorts car, and my son will never have to go through this when I buy him a honda.

I was just doing driveshaft/ rear end maintance on my 97.
There are 4 bolts that connect the DS to the rear end useing 2 "horse shoes" If the bolts backed out or the shoes broke, thats one surefire way to drop the DS.

It's kind of unnerving knowing that your driveshaft is held in place by two tiny u-straps made out of thin steel, held in place with four teeny bolts. If even one of those bolts is loose or missing, you're asking for trouble.
Yep sounds like the u joint let go.. Check the yoke and the drive shaft for any damage.. if there is chang them too..a drive shaft that was basicly drug at 100 mph might be banged up and bent.. and will cause a hell of a vibration too
I can't believe it did not just go ahead and came out.
You are lucky for sure.
The load on the u-joints are not on the bolts that hold the driveshaft in place. All the load is actually on the yoke side. The 4 bolts and metal band just keep it in place so it can pivot.

yeah i was in my buddies bronco when he did a burnout and the u joint blew. rrrrrrrrrrrrrrboooooooooom! haha, next day after we sobered up we just swaped it out in no time. take a look at the driveshaft and see what looks like its busted.
I think my tranny caused the damage, I removed th d/s and cranked the engine, I hears metal to metal contact in the tranny, not normal. The u joint holding the d/s to the rear were sheared off.

.. hell any car can have a CV or U joint break..
