Doing Clutch this weekend...Any Tips?
Doing Clutch this weekend...Any Tips?
Installing a mcleod single disc clutch along with there PP, and flywheel. Is there any good tips you guys got for me. Also how do i check to see if my input shaft is bent? Let me know if you can think of anything i don't wanna have to replace another clutch in 5,000 miles again. Thanks.
Get a 1/4" drive 14MM swivel socket for the left top bellhousing bolt and at least 2' of extension for the top bolts. Either drain the transmission fluid first or leave the driveshaft in to prevent fluid leaking out. I use plastic bags for groups of bolts to keep everything organized. Have fun and don't forget the disk centering tool.
get it high enough in the air, my nose was hitting the bottom of the car when i did mine, cheap jackstands. also, check behind yourself freguently. i forgot to push the fork in before putting the tranny in and it wouldn't engauge the bearing. that made for a lot of cussing, 2 extra hours, and too many more beers.
I had a much easier time unbolting the tranny from the bell-housing, keep a seal in the rear or you'll lose your fluid. Lower it out of the way and then you have much easier access to the bell-housing top 2 bolts. Did you get a clutch install tool with your kit? You'll need that too if you didn't know already. Be sure and clean an clutch hydraulic fluid (Dot 3 brake fluid) from inside the bell housing, cheapest brake cleaner you can find works well, keeps the oil and crap out of your new clutch. You'll do fine, good luck.
oh yeah one more thing while your right there inspect your rear main seal make sure it's in good shape and your pilot bearing that goes in the back of the crank. They don't go bad typically but I'd put a little lube in it at least before you restab it.
If your doing it on jack-stands restabbing it can be fun but if you put together a couple 4x4's about 5" apart on a 1/2" piece of plywood about 14"x 14" and place it under the center of your tranny, get a friend to help you of course, then get a small hyd jack on wheels under it you can roll it up while adjusting the angle/height and it stabs considerably easier than trying to muscle-head it in by hand.
