Do you know where my oil leak may be coming from??
Do you know where my oil leak may be coming from??
My oil pan is full of oil and the torque converter cover right there. It seems to leak when I turn the car off after running it,.. but it will only dribble like 3 or 4 drops and thats it.it may leak when im driving, i dunno. The oil cap is tight. Thanks for the help.
If the length of the oilpan is covered in oil you most likely have a leak at the front of the engine. Typical locations would be a timing cover seal (especially the waterpump drive seal), the infamous intake manifold leak, and also between the oil pan and timing cover. If you've never had the engine apart than it's most likely the intake manifold... just run your finger underneath the front of it to check.
If the oil is at the rear and over the tranny it's most likely the RMS or an intake manifold leak.
Valve cover leaks can also cover the oil pan, as well as a leaking oil plug or oil filter.

Trans pan does have oil on it too. Around the sides of the oil pan look good except for the side by the torque converter. thats the only side that has oil on it. Does ths narrow anything down?

To pinpoint the leak, clean the underside really good with rags, start the car, and see where it comes from.
If you mean the backside of the oil pan than I'd first check the back of the intake manifold. Reach behind the intake manifold from topside and feel for oil on the back of the engine/bellhousing. If it's leaking there you will get plenty of oil, if not just some grime.
I'd still inspect the front of the engine carefully. If there's a leak there it will blow its way back. Look on the K member underneath the crank's hub and by the steering rack for signs of oil accumulation.
A dealer can also drop some dye in the oil and use a blacklight to help locate the leak, if you just can't seem to find the source..

Thanks for the help guys,.. I may take it to LS1 speed in april, I don't know if i trust anyone else messing with that manifold if thats what it is. There only 30 min. 30 miles from my house. Thanks again.
Sounds like the rear manifold leak like these cars are so prone to getting. Someone said it was due to the EGR pipe warping the intake manifold
but that has happened to me twice. had it fixed under warranty both times. Now i am doing the !EGR lets see if that fixes it.

It's not that it warps the manifold, it's the extreme heat that the EGR tube develops. It can get to over 700 degrees surface temp, and can deteriorate the gasket seal between the block and manifold over time due to prolonged exposure to the heat. The mating surfaces on the back of the manifold are also thinner than the surfaces toward the front, so an intake leak is just begging to occur.
It's most likely the IM leak... it's pretty common. LS1 Speed should take care of you, they have a good rep. Although if you are so inclined, fixing the leak is not all the difficult if you have some DIY skills. In simple terms you remove the intake manifold, remove the old gaskets and RTV, install fresh gaskets, and lay down a nice bead of RTV front and back before torquing the intake manifold back in place.
