Do I really need a new timing chain?

Doing a heads cam swap, do I REALLY need to replace the timing chain?

Yes, and get something better than stock. Why lose power by inaccurate valvetiming, and risk grenading the motor for a $200 chain.

Its only about 200 why would you want to do the labor twice. You also dont know the condition of it untill you get it tore apart.

I would at least change the chain and the top sprocket. You would probably be okay in just changing the chain, but it is a risk.

Re: Do I really need a new timing chain?

Should I just replace them with stock replacements or do I need the "LT4 Extreme Duty" timing chain?

My car's coming up on 100k miles, by the way.

Re: Do I really need a new timing chain?

You can get away with stock peices, but check for chain tightness, if it is looser then you can move up to a larger crank sprocket to tighten the chain up. If you have the money the LT4 chain is nice.

Yes. My motor was only at 57k when I replaced my chain when I installed the hotcam and my stock chain was really loose, I was surprised how much slack there was in it. I replaced it with a Cloyes double roller to eliminate the cam drive for only $80 and then went with an electric wp for $135.

I was about to do a cam install and was thinking the same thing. Electric waterpump and cloyes double roller. You just used a standard SBC setup right? I just cant see paying $300 for a timing chain when I could get a electric pump and gain a few horses and take less strain off the cam/berrings and get a good double roller for less money than an "extreme timing chain"

Oh what brand and where to buy a electric water pump for $135? The ones I've priced were around $160-$180

Cloyes can direct you.

Here's their catalog, They have some oversized sets about mid way through.
