Do I need to clean this off?

1997 Z-28. Replacing oil pan gasket. This is the front of the engine. There's a bead of silicone there that isn't present at the rear of the engine. Do I need to clean it out of there before I put the new gasket in? The arrow is pointing to said silicone.

Thanks.

How 'bout lacquer thinner, rubbing alcohol, or mineral spirits? I don't have any brake cleaner right now, I don't think.

You think so? I've been worried sick over that little bastage. I'm not doubting your knowledge since I'm sure it's more extensive than mine, but for my information, what makes you so confident that it will be OK?

any where it gets it will get crushed if it even makes it in there.....I would pull the tube out....I bet you its in the dipstick tube still.

The oil pickup has a screen on it so it can't get inside of there.......

cheack that tube, since you have the pan dropped run a coat hanger thru it and see if you feel it

The screen on the oil pump pick-up tube would stop it from causing any damage, as it cannot get drawn into the oil pump. Since you already have the pan off though, you might as well try to find it. I would have pulled the dipstick tube out first though, as it may still be stuck inside the tube.

Done that. I think now I'm just going to go put the new gasket in, put my plug wires on the opti and call it a day. Thanks for your help guys.

I would guess it is probly jammed between the pick-up screen and the metal sheild that goes over top of it......Let it ride, I don't think it will hurt anything if you don't find it.
