Do I need better ignition????

Sup guys.... got my motor going good and just opened her up for the first time. I was just wondering.....I upgraded eveything in there except the ignition. I have the stock coil in there. Should I get me an MSD 6 and a better coil??? Will I see any gains from it. From what I gathered...not really, just better mileage.

IMO the 96-97 ignition does fine on a stock engine, but being that you have a heavily modded engine, I'd go with an aftermarket ignition. My friend just put an MSD digital ignition and his and says it's running alot better now (383 in a '97 as well).

Yep. On a stocker you won't see much (or any) of a gain, but on a heavily modded motor, it'll make sure the mixture gets lit and you'll gain a few horses too.

msd digital 6 or the accel 300+, both are digital ignition. the msd 6al is analog and would be a step down from stock.

best bang for your buck-LTCC w/LS1 coils!!! if it can stand up to a turbocharged motor with 20+PSI its good enough for me!

I beg to differ. The MSD upgrade helped my car out considerably. It was my first mod when the car was stock. smoothed out the idle and make the RPM band very smooth. Definantly helped out allot.

perhaps the opti was on its way out. the stock system is good enough for a while on stock motor or even bolt on motors.

So any MSD 6a system? Not familiar at all with ignitions. Ebay has a crap load of them. What about a coil???

You could use any of the ignitions talked about above. As for a coil, I went with MSD's plug in coil. It's a direct fit for our OBDII cars.

i put a crane hi-6 with the crane coil on my 95 and there was no difference. on the stock engine i couldn't even tell i made a change. so to say its better than stock on mild bolt ons IMO would not be true. i actually wondered if i wasted my money. i asked a mechaninc at the local chevy dealer what the stock coil put out and he told me 50,000 volts. i didn't put my fluke on it to verify so i think the stock ignition is pretty good.

if you must get a msd unit get the digital 6, the 6a is a waste of money, the lt1 ignition is digital, the 6a is analog. youd be taking a step back. if you must get a ignition get a ltcc ot digital6 or accel 300+.
