Do I have a catback or muffler only exhaust system (pics inside)
Do I have a catback or muffler only exhaust system (pics inside)
Hey guys, I bought the car about a year ago from a dealer. The only modification was a MagnaFlow Exhaust system, but they didn't say whether or not it was a catback system or just the muffler. It sounds great regardless of what it is. It also came with "MagnaFlow Performance" exhaust tips. I took a couple pictures from underneath the car, so maybe you guys would be able to recongnize if it is the stock I-pipe or not. If it is just the muffler, are there any places which sell a larger I-pipe, or would I have to get something custom made? Is it correct that the MagnaFlow catback has a 3" pipe and stock is 2.5"? Thanks!

Thank you for the responses so far. I took a few more pictures and added them to my original post.
Are the Flowmaster 80 series mufflers not very loud on the LT1? The reason I ask is because this muffler is pretty quiet at idle, but it sounds deep and rumbly when you get on it. At WOT, it sounds like a jet engine taking off
My 91 Firebird (with the 3.1 engine) has the Flowmaster 80 series muffler w/ 2.5" I-pipe, but it sounds much louder, especially at idle.

I had an 80 series muffler on my last Z, for like a week, and it wasn't very loud at idle, and personally I don't think it was very loud at WOT either. I swithced over to a Hooker cat-back system and loved it.

the stock exhaust does not have mandrel bent tubing...this does has mandrel bent tubing ..., I could be wrong though as the pics don't go all the way to the cat.
Typically the aftermarket vendors making the cat-back systems benifits are gained from mandrel tubing with a higher flowing muffler....nothing else really all too special about them.

The view isn't great, but it almost looks like the tailpipe is not stock. The muffler definitely looks like a Flowmaster.

Correct the stock exhaust is mandrel bent. I still have the stock system on my car (Not for long though
) and the pipes look almost identical to the ones in your pic before the muffler.

Why would people hate on this muffler? I think it sounds great, I am sure it probaly doesn't add more that 3-4 hp at the rear wheels but if we wanted our mufflers to be the power producer we would be driving Honda Civic's! Get rid of those cats and she will really come alive.

All sound like opinions from people who have had it and nothing really all that negative, just that it wasnt as loud as a hooker... Theres is another Flomaster bashing thread in LT1 tech though

Yep that's a flowmaster. 3 or 3 1/2" pipe going into the muffler then out 2 1/2" tips. I can see it from my window here. I cut it off right before the muffler
Sound exactly the same except much louder. Same sound and tone, low at idle, loud as hell at WOT, but you can hear back fires alot more. You'll also notice more of a top end gain. I didnt notice any low end loss.
