Do the Fans cool the car that much?

I have been having an overheating problem with my car, everything seems to be fine now except I noticed the fans weren't comming on at all. Today it got up to 225 and I have a 160degree therm, and the fans didn't come on. I am thinking this is my problem but would it make that much of a difference, my car went from 200 to 220 in like 1 or 2 min. If this is my problem how do I fix it. I guess I will look more into it tommorow. Also I haven't started my car for like 4 months and did that today also, it made a weird noise at first then it was ok, the oil was the old oil but had like 5 miles on it. I hope I didn't ruin anything by trying to start it, it didn't sound good.
thanks

1st of all: a shorter sig please?

Yes the fans play an important role in cooling the engine. Air-dam too when you're moving. I believe the PCM turns on low-speed fans ~225deg and the hi-speed fans at ~245 (correct me if i'm wrong). The hi-speed turns off somewhere around 230 though, so it'll just bounce around that temp.

EDIT: I MAY BE WRONG ABOUT STOCK FAN TEMPS. sorry

btw, i hear you need to reprogram fans with a cooler tstat.

Check the fan's fuse in the fuse box. You may have a blown fues if your fans don't start at all.

I guess you need to change your oil, even with no use oxidation will change the property of the oil.

Fan Fuse

I just was looking at my fuses and I didn't see any that had anything to do with the fan. Do you know which one? I will put some power to the fan tommorow to see if it is broken, if not I have to find the little thing that isn't making them turn on. Or I might to to run a manual fan switch like I have in my other car.
thanks

check the fan relay in the black plastic box on the drivers side under the hood it has a little plastic screw holding a lid on it.

if thats bad it wont come on.

There is nothing wrong with you fan fuses if they dont turn on at 225. The fans dont kick on till it is almost in the red mark of the gauge. Mine used to do that and I thought mine was broke. That is the stock programing. You have to reprogram your fans for a 180 degree turn on, or just get a fan switch. You can make a fan switch for under 10 with parts from walmart and it takes about 30 minutes. And yes fans are a big part in cooling. My car never goes above 180.

FANS

I reprogramed my fans, the car use to run fine and never go to 200, only if it was close to 100 degrees outside. I am hoping it is just my fan and not my waterpump, but it shouldn't be it is fairly new. I will check the relay tommorow, thanks

When I first started running my car at the track I would get anything from 14.62 to 14.99 in the 1/4 @ 95-96mph. I went to the track on three separate nights. ALL three nights my first run was CLEARLY the best ET, even though my 60' times were consistently 2.3x. I was baffled at what was going on. Then after talking to people on the boards here I learned that when you have your AC on, your car's cooling fans turn on at a lower temperature. (They always tell you to turn off your AC at the track) So I installed a manual fan switch and voila!, I consistently hit 14.6x in the 1/4 @ 96-97mph. In my opinion adding the manual fan switch was one of the best things I did to my car.....my car was still extremely slow, but at least I could repeat the same times over and over throughout the whole night!

First off is the SES light on? If so, scan it, and get the code. I had the same problem when my air pump went bad. It's on the recall list and the dealer should fix the air pump for free and then just replace the fuse if it did burn out or not. Just a thought.

I have no lights on at all. I am hoping it is just the fan and not my CSI waterpump.
