Disecting my Old Optispark

I am getting my old broken opti from home and disecting it. Why, you ask? First to better understand how that SOB works. Second to see what killed it in the first place. I am interested in wether it was a coolant leak, or water got in, or just a cap and rotor problem. At the time, I couldnt wait around and figure out what it was since it is my daily driver.

What should I look for? I am thinking if it was coolant it see some green lines from where it leaked in or sat inside. If it was water mainly just water/rust spots. Perhaps some oil somehow got in and gunked things up.

Just kind of looking for some suggestions on what other folks found in their opti disection and what I should watch for. I figure if it was something that may happen again down the road I can prevent it.

If you guys want I can take pictures of the process if someone wants to host them.

Replacing the opti was one of the first things I did when I bought my car... I did it as a preventive maintenance thing ... When I opened it, it had oil in it and the disc was rusted... I'm glad I went through the trouble after seeing that.

Re: Disecting my Old Optispark

Well mine was nice enough to last through one year after I bought my car and then crap out when I brought it out from winter. It was shot after a rainy drive to buy something from a board member. The first opti lasted 37k and 10 years. Although my newest one was acting up a few days ago when it was raining so I cam thinking that it wants to go back to its old tricks again. I have to figure out what the deal is cause I cant do this every year. Maybe I'll wrap it a plastic bag

Sure. Email the pictures to kendall@akgaming.com

I will host them up on my site.

I just bought a cap and rotor for my 95 optispark for my optispark conversion. I have yet to purchase an optispark, but I figured the cap and rotor was a good idea since they break so often. I will also be using silicon around my opti to prevent any fluids to damage the opti.

Actually, someone mentioned in another thread sealing around the opti with silicone... When I put mine together, I put a thin layer of black silicone on the outer edges of the housing and tightened down.. It already has a rubber ribbon type strip to seal it, but I figured I had nothing to lose taking an extra precaution.

The silicone is an interesting concept. I'll do it next time, cause I'm sure there will be one.

Re: Disecting my Old Optispark

they are vented to let gases escape, might not be such a good idea sealing them up? i dont know though, seems that they crap out enough as it is, so you probably will fare better sealing it up lol

My opti lasted 8yrs 82k miles but when I pulled it apart it had rusted disc crud around optical eye rotor was wore out and bearing pretty much froze up. Also had the green crud in few terminals.

Hey Dustin, how you been?

If you don't want that opti anymore, I'll take it to shoot it. I'll blow the crap out of it, then post the video online. Lemme know

For gases to excape? What gases are in the opti? No one is sealing the vented opti's vent holes, just the casing from my understanding.

I am not going to let you murder my Optispark! If anything I would like to see it work again and if possible next time my opti goes I can try it and save some cash. I always think you should know thy enemy well, in this case its just a distributor. But thanks for the thought, if it gives me too many problems I'll make a nice depiction of its death.

Re: Disecting my Old Optispark

my opti was 10 years old and had 56k. I was really surprised it worked as well as it did (had to replace b/c oil leak into opti caused erratic idle), with all the crap broke in it: a broken "tooth" for the spark path, really messed up bearing, tons of white chunks in it (from the little spark post?), and an oil leak that messed up the optical eye.

Really reccommend replacing the seal behind it when you do it.

Re: Disecting my Old Optispark

Its been a year since I did it and I remember the seal around the drive of the optispark, but was there one in the timing cover also? I had a thought at one time that oil might have leaked in mine as well.
