disaster BIG decisions

my waterpump disaster turned into a blown head gasket....the guy wants $1000 to do both gaskets and send the heads to a machine shop for a look over.....now my problem with that is its getting close to the cost of a rebuild and under my engine everything is leaking oil pan is smashed rear main is leaking why not just get a rebuild? im going to start pricing rebuilds i drive my car daily driver all stock i wouldnt mind a little more power but nothing thats going to cut down the life of the motor i want it to run good for a long time. so i was wondering what you guys have paid for rebuilds whats a good price and whats too much thanks....also and aftermarket parts i should pick up to have installed during the rebuild

I paid 2500 CDN To have the block remade, and all the internals replaced with stock stuff. Wish I had more money to do it better though

That also included labor and fluids and such.

Wink

I thought my head gasket went too after the waterpump install. Upon engine removal however, I'm pretty sure I hooked one of hte hoses up backwards and was flowing coolant into one of the exhaust manifolds. CHECK ALL THE HOSE, THEN RECHECK THEM AGAIN! I still wanted to rebuild the engine anyways

I just had a kicker motor built just to hold me over till i finally get off my butt and finish the 396.. cost me 1700 bux complete from intake to the oil pan.. Mind you that i shattered 4 rod's and 4 piston's and the crank was cracked.. w/ all new internal's.. Guy is in Queen's NY and does excel. Work.. Comes w/ a warranty as well..12 months' 12K miles.. Ain't much.. but its somthing.. Actually took the motor back to him for a few other things like a 847 cam , valve springs, and a cloyes.. All that and still under warranty.. the rear main leaking is really not that big of a deal.. the smashed oil pan sounds quite interesting actually.. how'd that happen? otherwise just put together a reg. rebuild and the more part's he can reuse such as the rod's, crank and stuff it could be cheaper.. Don't have the number but its' westchester crankshaft in queens in case you wanted it..

For what you are looking for, I think the hotcam kit would be ideal. Will be fine for your daily driver and includes everything you need to upgrade the valvetrain along with the cam.
