Unhappy Disappointed with new times, need help...

Ok, My best timed used to be 13.2 @103mph on street tires with a 2.03 60' time. I had a Yank 3500 converter, LTs, catback, CAI, pullies, TB! and stock 3.23's at that time, weather was nice, about 65-70F.

Now in hot, humid 80-85F I run a 13.4@103 with the addition of 160stat, cam, 1.6RRs, springs, electric WP, and a new chip. I don't think the bad weather would make this much difference. I ran a 2.07 60' time on street tires, but I did encounter a problem shifting into 3rd.

The car shifts from 2nd at 5,800 rpms to 3rd it feels like the car falls on its face for just a second then picked up once the rpms were up. Should I be shifting more around 6,000-6,200 rpms? I hope the shift point is the only problem, would anything else cause this problem (tuning, shift points, rocker arms???)?
Thanks.

Re: Disappointed with new times, need help...

Honestly i think you have something wrong. Im running those times, with faster trap speeds and i have practically nothing done. I dont know how accurate stock tachs are, but i also believed they rev faster than the motor. Mine shifts at like 6200rpms, but in actuallity i think it shifts more at like 6000rpms. I say try to shift higher, if you cant try to get a new chip. All i can say for sure is that your car should be much faster.

Yeah, I was expecting to be in the 12.8 range givem the weather & the street tires I was running on. I'm going to call the chip tuner Monday, maybe he'll have some answers.

Maybe try a 3.73 gear and some wideband tuning on the dyno.

Shift it at 6200 and see how it does. Also, check the valve lash again.

Ok, more news. The car is running like crap now. On the road this morning I was getting what sounded like small backfres. The car also was running sort of rough, first only at 40mph or faster, then it was rough at all speeds.

Does this sound consistant with a valve lash problem?

Don't know on your problem, but congrats on your runs.

With a 2.0 60' I ran 13.15 @ 109 last time.... Maybe I need a 1.6 60'... hahaa.

Little backfires? Tune, ignition, or fuel. Ya if they were adjusted wayyy wrong they could probably do that. Possibly if they were staying open all the time. (Too tight?)

sounds like either the opti, or a burnt plug wire. when if ever have you changed the opti? might also want to hook up a fuel pressure gauge and monitor that

I have never replaced the opti. God, I hope it's not that. I just replaced the waterpump 2 weeks ago. The car is running worse now, backfiring, etc.

I was shifting at 5900 with that cam and ported heads so I dont think your shift points are the problem...

Sounds about right. If the waterpump was dumping coolant on the opti..... it is possible thats your problem. Thats the way mine happened.

yup, sounds like the opti to me. Does it buck and misfire, and feels like the car has lost half of its power?

just about. I'm afraid to really give it much gas, I don't want to make anything worse. Is it safe to drive home or is it AAA time?

Re: Disappointed with new times, need help...

I found with the opti, if you let it cool off you can get a few miles down the road before it starts acting up again. (took me 3 hours to go 15 miles when mine went out)

I went through 4 "new" opti's before I got a good one.

but yeah it sounds like an opti. the longer mine ran the lower the misfiring would start, at one point it was as low as 1300 rpm, and was undrivable.
