Differential Cover

I'm replacing my OEM differential cover with a SLP OEM cover (i.e. with a drain plug). I killed the other cover when jacking. It doesn't leak but looks unsightly etc...

1. My 1st question is, after I remove the cover and clean the rear differential flange do I put the permatex on both the rear flange and the cover flange plus the gasket ? (I bought a gasket from Pep Boys). I guess the question is, do you need a lot of the Permatex or just a thin layer. I got the ultra black "Gasket Maker" stuff in a tube. There's so many sealants out there now. This is RTV based.

2. I'm planning on filling with Mobil 1 Gear oil. Is this good for our cars ? I assume it is ok. Anybody know the capacity ? I know you wait till the oil comes out of the filler plug but I was curious anyway so I can buy the correct amount up front.

Thanks,

Sal

I used a new gasket and only put the rtv on the side of the gasket facing the cover. I just had it off recently again after having it on there 6 months or so and the gasket came off in one piece stuck to the cover and I reinstalled it again without any leaks. It will take 2 quarts, I used Mobil 1 75w90 in mine and it's been fine, just make sure you also use a bottle of GM lsd additive. Very important!!!

Here is a really good how to guide on it from Brent's site.

Same here. I used Brent's guide when I did mine with the Mob1 and GM limited slip potion. No leaks, all is well

If you use his guide, shoot him an email and let him know how it went. Personally, I like to let people know when I use their guides.. kind of nice for them to hear if their attempt at helping others out actually did or not.

To add to how you installed the gasket. I rtved it like you, but then let some oil soak into the dry gasket. This insures it won't stick to the housing. Lasts forever that way.

I read Brents guide (its great), I just bought another quart of the Mobil 1 Gear oil (now I have the 2qts), and I decided to buy the red RTV sealant/gasket maker and forgo the Ultra black sealanr. And I just made it to my dealer and got the GM LSD additive ! I'm good to go and do the right job like I prefer to do I'm doing my rear sway bar at the same time so it kinda works out as far as the bar getting in the way problem. (I'm switching to the 21mm rear bar). This message board is invaluable. Thx again for all your responses. Everyones been a team player !

mine took about 1.5 bottles of the fluid and the 4 oz bottle of limited slip additive. i used the valvoline synapower fluid and i assume the bottles are the same size. just warning you that you probally won't use the full two bottles. good luck
