Different Rear Main seal?

So I ordered the rear main housing and it came with a seal in it but its not the typical hard brownish one..its black and soft more rubbery feeling...Has anyone seen this before?

Lol, no way to read a p/n off the rubber in a pic of that size.

You can somewhat read the number on this seal. Center right on the middle pic.

Ok. It was a shot in the dark to try to help identify it, seeing that the GM one I used had the p/n stamped on it. Not sure what you have, there.

Re: Different Rear Main seal?

Yeah its real weird I have a gm seal from a gasket kit but this is the one that actually came in the NEW housing straight from gm thats why im confused

Im tempted to just pull it out and put the other kind on...What would you do

Re: Different Rear Main seal?

I have heard of a teflon seal or something like that. Would I be tempted to say that if it came from GM with the seal in it, that it should be good to go? Probably, yes.

I just looked at the parts books and see that the housing comes with a seal. What p/n housing did you buy?

Possible, but 556 still shows to be available.

Re: Different Rear Main seal?

I'm reasonably certain that the bronze-colored RMS is the 'teflon' seal -- is it not? At least, that's what Autozone handed me when I asked for one (felpro).

The rubber felpro seal is actually more expensive than the teflon version ~ $18 rubber versus $14 teflon.
