Difference in shifter between Hurst and Pro 5.0?

Just looking at the pictures of these shifters I have noticed that the Hurst shifter has a little bend in the shifter arm before it goes straight again. The Pro 5.0 shifter is straight the whole way. So what's the difference, what does that bend do because I noticed the stock shifter has it too?? Which one of these shifters is the shortest, or are they both the same?? Thanks.

as far as i know the bend in the stick is just to prevent the stick from contacting the side of the console (the square hole the shifter sits in). the Pro 5.0 probably has been engineered so that it doesn't come close enough to it.

the stock stick has alot of play in it due to the rubber bushing in the base where it attaches to the shifter mechanism itself. this being true, the bend is there to prevent the stick from conttacting the side when shifted hard. even though the mechanism may not allow that much travel, the play in the rubber bushing may. the pro 5.0 is such a rock solid shifter that they probably don't need to worry about it, combined with the shorter throws it obviously has.

i have a Hurst shifter off of an SS, combined with a Lou's short stick (which is almost straight only a 10 or 15 degree angle to it) and the stock round shift **** came very close to hitting the console. close enough that if you had a finger behind the ****, shifted to 2nd/4th/6th you'd probably pinch it...
with my MBA shift ****, which is designed to shorten a stick even more by not starting the treads untill well inside the ball (compared to stock), the **** is only about 1/8th inch away from the console when in 2/4/6th gear...and it taps it when i really power shift, but not bad...

kindda a long answer but i hope i helped

bottom line...Pro 5.0 is the top of the line shifter...you wont' be dissapointed.

Yeah I figured the Pro 5.0 was the best, I just wondered about that little notch in the shifter. I'll have to look at how close my stock one comes to the console the next time I drive it. Thanks for the answer.

Hey, I have a hurst in my 94Z...the stick itself is staight. I know the stock stick has a bend at the top, but my hurst does not. It does sit at about a 10 degree angle. My brother also has a hurst in his car....his is the chrome version...it too is straight.

Hurst makes a couple different versions of its shifter. The one i have in my car is on par with the pro 5.0 cars that i have driven. Rock hard shifts, not sloppy at all, wont move in gear at all, fast self centering etc.

On the other hand, a buddies hurst is sloppy. I wouldnt even buy it.

As far as what model mine is, who knows, it was in the car when i bought it. It is neither the chrome shaft, nor the black shaft. It's just regular lookin metal color. The shaft is bent, and it says hurst down it vertically. I havent seen anything that looks like this for sale, or in any other cars. Maybe they dont make them anymore.

lol. I agree that most the hurst shifter suck in comparision. But why would you stop making the good model?

The factory Hurst shifter is not on par with the Pro5.0 but the Hurst Billet Plus IS, IMO.

Hurst keeps changing which shift lever they send with the Billet Plus. They've come with both straight and angled levers. The angled lever simply puts the shifter closer to the driver's thigh.

i know what you mean. i dont know why companies make a great product. and then stop making it.

it would be interesting to find out what model it is though.

I've got a pro 5.0, best shifter you can get out there. I've also cut about an inch off threaded portion of the stick so it has an even shorter throw. I've driven ripper and hurst, the hurst completly sucked the ripper wasn't half bad but the extra few bucks for the 5.0 is without a doubt worth it.

I have a hurst billet plus shifter, lou's short stick, and a t-handle and I love my combination. Why do so many people think this shifter sucks? I think it is great. It shifts smoothly and the throw seems almost too short. I can shift by moving my wrist instead of my whole arm. IMO hurst makes a good product, and a lou's short stick only makes it that much better.

My hurst is a billet plus and i love it. I have hursts in 3 of my cars and i loved them all. Hurst was the best in the muscle era and still is the best today.

soory to tell you this but if your living int he late 60s or 70s yes they WERE. the pro 5.0 is hands down the best shifter on the market for the fbodys.

be fore i bought mine i drove the pro 50 the the ripper and a hurst in the order. i thought the last 2 were sloppy feeling after driving the pro 5.0.
