It died and I cant seem to revive it!

ok, heres the deal......it was running fine and just quit like it was out of gas when coming up to a light. It has over 1/2 tank. It turns over fine and will kinda 'idle' for a few seconds then quit....blub.....blub....blurg....plat. Thats all i can get out of it. I have changed the fuel filter, added more fuel just in case, changed the coil, coil wire, coil module, tps, fuel pump relay, and all the fuses and relays are good. I have also pulled most of the plugs and they are all getting spark. You can also smell gas after trying to crank it up. I am at a loss here and am currently on a shoestring budget so I cant afford to be wrong and buy any more unneccesary parts. I've searched this site for help in this matter, but none of the others with the same problem have seemed to tell what their fix was. I dont want to change the opti for nothing, after all I am getting spark to all the plugs i have checked. The car is a 94 A4 with 121k miles...stock. Any help is greatly appreciated!

one more thing, its not throwing any codes, but i suppose thats because it isnt really running, when i pulled all the relays and did the work i dc'd the negative battery cable and if there were codes......theyre gone now
again, thanks in advance!

If you have proven good fuel pressure, the opti could be a suspect, even though there is some spark. If the EGR valve somehow got stuck open, that could cause you some problems.

Ok, I tested the fuel pressure and when I initially turn the key on it goes to 44-46 psi, when the humming stops, it drops down to 41 psi and stays there. It has no noticeable leakdown. SO.....I guess its opti-time for me? I am borrowing $600 to fix the thing, should I buy the whole assembly from GM or rebuild it with MSD cap and rotor? Either way, I'd like to change the plugs and wires while Im at it. I'm open for suggestions on what is going to be the best route to take for the 6 bills. Thanks!

If you have to get an opti, get one from Dal or Jason. It will be $300 or more for a non-vented for your 1994.

Re: It died and I cant seem to revive it!

not to bring back a dead topic- but im bringing back a dead topic
did u ever figure out what was wrong with the car- currently im having exact same problem except i just finished a cam and rocker install

car ran perfect then kinda just died one day - and now i cant get her to turn over.. just cranks and cranks..

i tested fuel and shes getting good pressure and the injectors are clean- shes definately getting spark, but just to be sure i put a new opti, coil, plugs and wires- all sensors are hooked up and i have no vacum leaks. PCM is tuned by madz and seemed to be working fine.

for some reason she just wont turn over- im thinking maybe my EGR is stuck open since its been programmed out after right before this happened.

but any help would be great

Does it sound funny when it turns over.
If it does it could be a timing chain, and a bunch of bent valves.
Did it quit all at once, like it was running ya shut it off and it won't crank??

Re: It died and I cant seem to revive it!

well she was running great, started having trouble idling and lack of power then i shut her down- after that she just cranks and wont start-

cranking sounds great, no wierd noises or anything- im thinking it has to do with valve lash since i just installed all new valvetrain. In talking to a friend he had his car running perfect and same issue- turned out from ride home he had his exhuast rocker on #8 cylinder come loose and wasnt allowing the exhuast to open.

unfortunately im taking off for a week and wont get to check untill i get back- im hoping this is the problem

Pull a valve cover and see if the valves are working when ya turn it over.

Re: It died and I cant seem to revive it!

My car is almost doing this too. Only, it isn't getting spark at the same time. The ICM is only getting .1 volts AC on the trigger signal. I've replaced the Opti and the coil so far, and the car still just cranks and cranks with no attempt to start up. The only noticible sound I hear when cranking that doens't sound normal is a slight hiss, what sounds like air leaking when the motor gets around to one cylinder, that could be a plug I suppose? Other than that, it cranks like it normally would. I'm lost at what to try next, I was going to get a PCM, but if it isn't that then I'm stuck with an extra PCM. Any more ideas/help would be really helpful. Not to hijack this thread, but the problem seems similar.

Thanks,
Nick
