Question Did your Mallory 685 make you car run better at all?

I am seeing lots of threads about people installing the Mallory 685 unit, I believe most people use it for nitrous. I have one of these, but have not installed it yet do to not having nitrous right now.

So when you people installed this unit, on NA, did it make your car run any different or better? Let me know please.

Thanks

If your ignition system is in good working shape, you will probably feel no difference in the way the car runs at all.

After recently installing the Mallory box, I did notice a slightly smoother idle, but that was it. The box is only there for the nitrous project that is underway right now.

I agree. I'm curious about it's features though.

So again, anyone who has installed this, have you noticed while running N/A that your engine ran better or had better performance when you installed it?

I use it for the nitrous to act as my window switch and to retard timing. I ran a "bit" slower trapspeeds with it n/a, but this could be due to different conditions at the track. I noticed that the car is a bit harder to start first thing in the morning. It sometimes takes two cranks to get started now, whereas before, it was much more crisp. I dont have the bypass switch, otherwise I would check to see if it starts better w/o it. Has anyone else had this problem? (btw. I have the start retard value set at the minimum)

Bryan H told me that a couple of his customers has the 685 and had the box just die on them.

No telling if this was an aberation or a problem.

Was heat the culprit? I have heard of people having some problems with their boxes because they had them mounted in confined areas.

Unknown.

And of course, two is not the same as three.

Once is happenstance.
Twice is coincidence.
Three times is enemy action.

Re: Did your Mallory 685 make you car run bettet at all?

Im sad to report that I am now one of those ppl who have had the box die on them. One day I hopped into my car and it moved all of 3 ft before dying suddenly. I popped the hood and immediately saw smoke coming from the mallory box. Luckily, I had used the MSD harness to hook up the 685 and was able to put the factory harness back into the coil so that I was able to drive home. The car actually starts up easier now on stock ignition than it did with the box installed.

I have shipped the box back to mallory and will see if they decide to fix it under warranty or not. I had it for less than 6 months. For what its worth, the box did its job when I was running the nitrous. Its been so long since Ive sprayed that I forget what it feels like now.

Although I have nitrous injection it is only used once in a while. The Mallory Hyfire is of course always in use. As a stand alone item it does nothing more for performance or gas mileage that I can tell. It is for all practical purposes invisible.

From a performance standpoint, I would say leave your ignition alone. Putting the Mallory in a late model Chevy HEI is just adding one more thing to go wrong imho.
