Did i get ripped off????
Did i get ripped off????
Ok heres the deal my 95 camaro was leaking oil from the timing cover where it meets the oil pan i took it to a place specializing in f=bodies the first estimate to replace the timing cover gasket, crank seal etc.was 250 bucks not bad they called me up a couple of hours later saying they would have to replace the oil pan gasket to and that they would have to cradle the motor out $1200 plus parts grand total of $1600 bucks i had new wires installed to i talked to the guy about my concern for the price and he said it was a nescessity to do it right....is he full of SH$t or does the price sound about right anyways got the car back and it still leaks oil.....they want my car for another week or so...what do you guys think
Re: Did i get ripped off????
If it was leaking from the TC then most likely, it needs to have the front of the oil pan seal replaced as well. I'm not sure that kind of work cost $1600.00 bucks. Heck, most places will charge $1200.00 just to remove and install a full engine.
Re: Did i get ripped off????
Obviously, without any of us seeing how badly the car is leaking (and where), it's hard to truly know...But I had the same exact kind of oil leak with my '95 Z28 that you are describing for yours and Speed Inc did NOT have to cradle the motor out to fix all the leaking, LOL. And it did not cost me nearly that much either. Hasn't leaked a drop of oil since (knock on wood).
But that sounds really excessive just to fix a leak...Not to mention it is still leaking after they charged you all that! What, do they want to take you for even more $$$ now that they want it for another week???
I don't know bro, that sounds like a serious rip off to me.
What is the name of this shop where you live?
Good luck,
Mike

For the price you paid there should be no leak. It is up to them to fix the leak.
They gave you a diagnosis and estimate then informed you of changes to original estimate and additional charges necessary to stop leak. You paid them and it still leaks.
They should have seen this before the car was delivered to you.
Bring it back for them to fix the leak, it should be on their dime now.
Make sure you have documentation of everything that has transpired from original estimate to final invoice. Sit down and write a narrative of what you remember happening from including names dates and times of contacts.
If they are a reputable place there should be no charge for the next and final visit.
If the leak is not fixed and you get charged again, you got screwed.
File a claim with your local small claims court and beat the snot out of them.
Good luck, if they are as you say in original thread they will make good on stopping leak. They've done alot not too much more to do or redo.

Re: Did i get ripped off????
F That man you could do it yourself with the right tools. You got screwed bad. I dont know what engine "craddling" is but, I just had My TC and oil pan gasket changed and it was less then 400 bux ( parts and labor)
Re: Did i get ripped off????
Holy! hell.... did you ever get ripped off. The dealership once tried to get me with the same BS... but even thier story was $900.oo to fix... no way would I have paid 1.6K to change an oil pan gasket...and them to lift the engine... unless they were going to slap on a cam and some heads while they were at it... and a new pan too. You got ripped off big time... and worse they didn't fix it... what were you thinking? It's not that difficult of a job. annoying yes... difficult no worth $1,600? Not ever...unless inflation makes $1,600 look like 16 dollars... I'd go back there with my lawyer and raise hell... but you already agreed to pay thier price and overcharging people isn't illegal... the most they can do for you is fix the leak.
Re: Did i get ripped off????
You got "EFF YOU SEE KAYED".
Fixing the leak is a job, but it's not $1600 bucks worth... not even half of that.
The wires... well, that's a PITA too, but if you had done some research you would have found that you could have done an "over the valve cover" set-up a hell of a lot easier.
Next time do a little research before paying a shop. Write this one up as a learning experience.
As far as F-bodies go... the combined knowledge of the people on this site will provide you with more information than any shop ever will.

), you should not have a leak.
I wouldn't pay 160 much less 1600..
