Did I get a bad WP?

Pretty simple ? here. I picked up a slightly used mechanical WP from a forum member and ran it today. New gaskets hoses and everything. Started it up and filled the radiator with water to test for leaks. Water was pouring out of the weep hole, very quickly.

I just want to make sure that this means the pump is bad, correct? There isn't anything that could be wrong with the install right? It's kinda hard to jack up the hoses, and it's not leaking from the WP seal.

That is the problem with used water pumps. They can be working fine when taken off the car. Then let it sit around for two months on the bench and it can start leaking when reinstalled or shortly after. Not an unusual problem.

Josh, did you mess with that weep hole at all, the pump I sold you came out of a car that was running under 2 months ago.

Daniel I didn't touch the weep hole on the pump. The only thing I did to the unit was clean it and reinstall the sensor. It was never dropped or anything.

I pulled the pump last night. The WP shaft seal, bearings, and spline all look good. I can't see anything wrong with it. It installed real easy and came off easy also.

On the pump I just picked up last night (not yours) I did screw with the weephole a little bit. There is a thread around here somewhere about running a hose from it, I just read it yesterday. I stuck a plastic hose barb about an 1/8 inch in there and ran a hose from it. I'm hoping to direct the water away from the opti if this pump goes bad. I just hope my opti isn't screwed from all the water that poured out of that weep hole.

If a used pump sits around for over a few days, with no water at the seal it will more than likely leak when reinstalled.

Sorry about that Josh. I know how bad you wanted that car up and running. Get a new WP and be done with it. $150 from Autozone and with a warranty.

I was short on cash so that's why I went with a used one. The pump was never able to be turned by hand before and after the install. The old pump could be turned and so can the one I just got. I'm guessing it siezed up sitting on the shelf.

IT LIVES!

Got another WP in, new opti, plugs, MSD wires. Car idles and runs better than ever. For once I could actually light the tires up from a stop.
