which did i break, clutch or t56?

So, today i drove about 400 miles and there was a slight grinding sound getting progressively worse that only came in when engaging the clutch. It finally let go tonight and now i get no forward or backward motion, just grinding. No grinding when i'm out of gear though.

My car is stock except for a CAI, i find it hard to believe that it could be the trans, but i can't explain the grinding i heard.

BTW, the clutch is some autozone replacement clutch that i've had for about a year.

What do you think? What should i do?

I considered doing it myself, but if its not the clutch i'll be stuck. i don't even have a service manual. I was gonna put the Z on jackstands and take out the trans and have a looksee, but don't want to tow the car twice.

Took it to a shop and the mechanic said it sounds like the clutch center has completely broken out, but he's not sure enough to order parts yet, we'll have to wait until the trans is dropped later this week. I sure hope thats the problem, i don't want to spend all that money on a new input shaft!

A grind like that can be many things, i had a similar grind that wound up being the pressure plate collapsing in on itself. Either way the clutches time is up, Good Luck

My shift fork did that. When I put the pedle to the foor it would grind on the pressure plate. Sounded awful. It got worse and worse to the point where I couldn't press it in with out feeling like I was going to break something. I thought It was the clutch, but upon tear down noticed the shift fork had really bad groves in it, from hitting on the pressure plate. Put a new one in and everything was fine. This might not be the problem, but sure sounds like it. Take a real good look at your shift fork.

Another way to check is shut the engine off & roll down a hilll while you are in gear & listen for clunking, when it come push the pedal in & see if it goes away, that would be the clutch HUB, which your mechanic calls center
