Question Did anyone make it so their A4 will hold 1st gear?

I was thinking about takeing the console out and cutting that block off the shifter so it will go in 1st gear. Did anyone do this yet? Did you have any problems with the tranny afterwards?
Thanks for any help

I did it to mine about 10 months ago and haven't had any sort of problem. I did it for the crusing factor, when crusing I can drop it into first and get the revs up. It was real easy to do and took about 15 mins total. Fun little mod though!

It will let you select 1st gear but it won't hold first gear.
In another words if you try to race it and hold first gear to long (beyond the shift point) the computer will shift the car for you even though you are in 1st gear.

The only way that you can hold 1st gear is through a shift kit (TransGo)

Ken,
Not saying that you are wrong, but my car doesn't have a shift kit, and will bounce off the rev limiter if I forget that I left it in first.

It will bounce off the rev limiter than it will shift. Not to sure how many times but it will shift.
I was racing down the track one time (many years ago) left it in 1st and forgot about it, so when the time for the 1st to 2nd shift was coming up the darn car started bucking big time, before I knew what happened the car shifted.

Another test is go out and slowly (little gas) put it in first gear and get close to its shifting point if not beyond than it will shift by it self even though your shifter is in 1st.

Yeah I never tested that. I just remember a couple time I left it in first by accident and didn't realize it until it was bouncing off the rev limiter, I always then threw it into second myself, never sat there to see what it would do. But, I did raise the rev limiter, so I thought it would have shifted sooner than that.

Trey,
I have done a few car cruises and stuff where the max speed is like 25 MPH and there are people lining the streets looking at the cars. So I wanted to be able to run in 1st and let the rev run up, just to show off for the crowds and stuff like that.

you know that manually downshifting in a car that doesn't haven't a manual valve body is bad right?

You are TEARING apart your poor trans. Go buy a 6spd if you want to do that.

When i went to the track and my interior lights went late at night, i was in 2 instead of D. anyway, i kicked that rev limiters ***.

I've done that, left it in first to see what the mph was at around 6K and it shifted in to second.

Actually, I didn't know that it was going to kill it. But, I don't want a 6spd I already had one, the A4 is better for racing I think, plus I plan on running N20 later and don't want to worry about missed shifts. I only really mess with manually down shifting at cruises and only do that about 5 times a year.

You dont need to pull the console. Just grasp the shifter handle firmly and ****** the b**** from 2nd into 1st. It will break the clip/block.

No I was told that too. I'm a pretty big guy and couldn't do it so I pulled the top of the console out and cut it it really took less time then trying to break it.

Trey is absolutely right.

NEVER NEVER NEVER downshift ur automatic transmission! An automatic trans is missing something very important that u would need to be able to do that safetly...ITS CALLED A CLUTCH.

By downshifting manually, u are forcing it into gear, and subsequently shortening the life of ur transmission.
