Destroyed Opti *PICS*

I replaced my opti this weekend. The unit I installed was a remanufactured part (BIG MISTAKE) with an MSD cap/rotor kit.

The MSD components bolted right up to the reman core. I turned the dowel gear to check for clearance, and she ran smooth as silk, so I went ahead with the install.

I drove the car roughly 40 miles before it started backfiring, and eventually stalled out on me, and threw the DTC Lo-Res Fail code again, which of course means, DEAD OPTI.

Curious how it could have crapped-out already, I take the opti out, and this is what i see...

The dowel gear was just a couple mm too long. I couldn't use the factory drive pin, as the reman core had it's own pin installed, and was non-removable.

When I bolted the opti to the front of the motor, the extra lengh in the pin pushed the rotor up, into the cap, and the damage is clear.

Let this be a lesson to everyone purchasing a new Opti, and not sure of which part to buy. STAY AWAY FROM CHEAPER REMAN PARTS!!!

Nice carnage. Was the rubber o-ring installed under the cap? I dont see it in the pic. This will have given you more clearance to possibly avoid this.

Yeah, the supplied o-ring was used. I think I just tossed it as soon as I removed the cap.

Note the plastic shavings... hahaha. Carnage indeed!

Good lord! Opti strikes again! Did you try spinning the pin by hand first? To see if there was any tension.

Are you talking about the dowel pin off the cam?
