describe knock...

My car is acting weird, but it's hard to describe. I had a thought earlier that it might be picking up false knock from my Magnaflow cat back. How would the car act if it was picking up noise from the exhaust system? I plan on getting the LT4KM this week if this has a chance of fixing my problems. Thanks!
Dan

Your car will run a sluggish because timing is being pulled. Get a Scanmaster and determine how much knock you are getting.

It may also present itself as pinging. It could be very light, or it could be heavy like a diesel. If that happens, do not drive the car!!

What octane gas are you putting in. Mine will knock moderately with 87 octane. 93+ octane and my car hardly has any real noticeable knock that you can hear.

1 TTT ever 3 hrs is bad

2. it will sound like a piston hitting a head, litterally. you will KNOW when you have knock. Your knock sensor will pull timing so you dont knock though

Dude, There have been a lot of replies as to what your problem is. If you don't believe anyone, just go buy a chilton's manual and read the troubleshooting section. If that doesn't work for you, I'm sure that a dealer would be more than happy to charge you out the A** to fix it. I know that I would

Ok....I'll explain knock even though I don't think what you are experiencing is knock.

Knocking happens when timing is so advanced that it actually fires the cylinder off before the piston reaches TDC (top dead center). When this happens, however, your ECU will automatically retard timing until the knock (detonation) stops.

B/c of the symptoms you described, I don't think this is a knock problem. I think it is piston slap. You say it occurs when the car is cold. Where do you live, and how cold is it there when you crank the car? Do you have this problem during the summer time, or just recently since winter? All the same, let you car warm up before you drive it under these conditions.

BTW - if you haven't noticed yet, knock is VERY BAD! It basically forces the other cylinders in your engine to overcome a force which is trying to push the rotating assembly in the opposite direction. (This is worded awkwardly, i know, but I couldn't find a better way)

i live in KY... and i did not think it was a knock either.... but it does infact sound sorta like a diesel when started and hasnt been sitting for about 5 minutes... like last saturday it was 69 degrees outside so its not cold i hopped in my car started... fooled with some stuff back up.... pull out and it did the noise as i pulled out so i drive it below 3k rpms which is when the noise is really loud... but if the car sits ideling for a while it does not do it.... help any? i thought it was just normal valve train noise from a cold'er car (bought my car in november never noticed) but i always warm my car up religously.... i only noticed since its getting lil warmer no sense in leaving car running all day.... or atleast i thought.... but something defiently wrong with the car goin to do some pm on it (preventative maintence) fuel filter o2s injector cleaner.. see how that does.... any other info for me?? its greatly appreciated
