Descreening of MAF

Descreening of MAF

if you descreen your maf does it make your car run more rich? thats what my car seems to be doing i think.

Yes, because the computer can no longer get a good reading of the amount of air entering...

It was a BAD idea to do what you did... Put the screen back in if you can...

There has been dyno tests done about this.

The tests proved that it creates no more power to remove the screen.

As stated in them though, there is no adverse effects either.
If you can't put it back in, don't worry about it in my humble opinion.

I removed mine as soon as I got my car years ago.
I did so without really looking into the test done - if I had to do it again, I'd leave it in just because it was a waste of time.

I've also read posts about people who have removed it and were not carefull about it. Like if a person were to punch it with a screwdriver and inadvertly hit the sensor part of the MAF.

You're looking at buying a new one then.

I woulden't say it's a bad idea, it definatly increases CFM and you'll see your AFG's rise buy quite a bit. It will probably do some harm at low flow, which doesn't help sensor accuracy. If your running a stock car i'd say leave it alone, the pro's and con's probably even each other out since the LT1's run rich from factory.

One less thing to worry about even thou I removed mine..

dyno shows .4 hp increase.. and a 1.3 lb ft torque loss... whichever is more important to you should help your decision.. on a stockish car.. leave it in.. on highly modified take that bitch out!

Actually, I bought a cheapie used one and ported, polished, descreened it and installed it on my 97SS. No problemo. Seemed to work fine and maybe even give a little better T response.

Put my stocker back on when I had Ed Wright program for my lil bitty cam (at Ed's advice).

Since have had heads done and PCMFORLESS. Still have my stocker on (sold my modded one on here).

If you want to experiment, that's cool, but I'd use a 2nd MAF to mess around with...

BTW, I don't believe that the MAF screen comes out of the 97 without cutting. The used one was just held in with a ring.JMHO

I thought Descreening and porting was a good Idea until I started really modifying the car, than I had a lot of tuning to try and figure out how to get it calibrated, than Ion (madZ28.com) helped me get it straightened out, and even then it wasn't consistant, I would have never done it if I knew what kind of headaches it would have caused down the road

If you have a straight airflow path such as on an SS hood, it will help a smidge, about 50cfm, on an ImpalaSS with a RAISS intake, but if you have anything else such as the stock air intake, Moroso, SLP, etc, you'll need the screen. It's there to straightent he path of the air.

Well, my car seems plenty healthy with no screen. Didn't have a hard time tuning it either.

Let me put this another way...
GM Powertrain Engineers + ZO6 Corvette= No screen...
