Descreen MAF ??/
Descreen MAF ??/
I have always heard not to do it that it always caused problems or was inacurate ect.. The last GMHTP book I received showed they did it to allow more air flow and said nothing about any negative consequences. Like I said I have read alot of negative things about this but then I see the pro's doing it.. Whats up? Did I miss something?
Re: Descreen MAF ??/
I descreened my MAF and also cut down the fins back in 1991 on my 1989 Trans Am. I know of others here in Southern California that have done the same thing. I have experienced no problems with my MAF and neither have the others I know of. Allen
Re: Descreen MAF ??/
The screen in the MAF does two things...
1) It acts as a filter so the MAF sensors are not damaged just in case anything slips by the air cleaner.
2) It straigtens the air flow into the intake.
Now heres what I think. Just by looking at the thickness of the screen, it doesn't seem like it can straighten the air out all THAT much. Plus, the air is going to get tossed around again before it gets to the cylinder anyway. Here's how I made my final decission whether to take it out or not... Take the screen out and hold it in front of your mouth. Put your other hand behind it and blow through it. Now, take the screen away but keep your hand there. Keep blowing about the same amount. Feel the difference? Shocking almost. Who knows if it actually helps or not. Has anyone ever tested this mod on a dyno? Considering if you buy a performance MAF sensor it doesn't come with a screen, I would assume it's either not worth having it installed, or it actually does help a slight amount. Worst comes to worst, just put it back in. Not a big deal.

Re: Descreen MAF ??/
I removed mine about 4 years ago and never saw any problems. No change in gas milage. Car runs just as smooth.
Should I have done it? Who knows. I have no proof that it hurt or helped anything.
