Delteq

Ok, so im pretty sure my opti died and decided to go with the delteq system. Its still running like crap. It sounds like a BAD misfire, backfires, and stutters. What part of the opti goes out? Is the sensor what goes bad?

I changed the plugs when i installed the Delteq with TR55's.

Thanks,
Stu

Like the LTCC setup, I think the Delteq relies on an Optispark with a good optical section.

There are two sections to the opti, the optical (sensor) section, and the cap & rotor. And both can go bad.

If you're having a misfire problem with the Delteq setup, then I'd make sure all your wiring is right, and if it is, then I'd be led to believe that the optical section in your opti is suspect.

Im almost positive that the wiring is all good. The delteq system is really straight forward. All the coils are labeled and comes with good instructions. The plugs are all routed so they wont burn, im good at routing wires

Would i have to buy ANOTHER opti on top of this? Maybe i can get someone crapped out one with a good sensor.

You might be able to get an optical section from Autozone. It's a full opti minus the cap & rotor.

I've got the same problem. My car is in the shop with directives to the mechanic to check the opti signal with an oscilliscope.

With that said, I understand that when the opti signal goes bad, it immediately throws a code. My car throws no code?

Good luck.

I'm having similar problems. Just out of curiosity, are any of you guys running aftermarket cams?

Disco -- have you checked the LED diagnostics? If the LED on the opti-box isnt flashing the way it should, then that would prove it is not receiving the opti signal correctly. If it IS flashing the way it should, then you are receiving signal from the optispark. I didnt get the diagnostics paperwork with my kit, but they have it posted up on their website if you need it.

Delteq believes that when the optical sensor goes out, it's either all or nothing. You can have it checked, but I would STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you dont go replacing everything on the car as I did -- because there's no saying what is causing your prolem. Find out what is causing your problem before sinking money into it.

I wanted to refrain from posting anything until I was certain as to what was going on, but I'm having similar problems with the Delteq -- and, people need to be aware that it doesnt always work as easily as it should. My car has been down for over a month. It ran absolutely fine ever since I've owned it, and it ran absolutely fine up to the few hours before I installed the Delteq.

Now, the car barely starts, the idle jumps around from 1000-1300rpm as if someone is tapping the pedal (TPS and IAC dont seem to have any effect on this), and the car misfires badly from 1-3K. Above 3000rpm, all the cylinders will begin firing and everything suddenly runs fine. Also, after 10-15 minutes of driving with the misfire, the problem COMPLETELY disappears, so HEAT seems to play a factor in this.

Long story short, I've spent over $1K trying to get this system to work. I've trouble-shooted all that I could on my own: plugs, wires, oxygen sensors, PCM's and programming, sensors, fuel pressure, fuel injectors, you name it. I was supposed to have sent it back to Delteq already, but I'm buying an LT1 Scanmaster tool so I can monitor my car first -- just to make certain that everything is working ok on my car. Though, again, my car ran fine before the delteq unit...

I still stand by my word that Delteq has great customer service -- Pete even offered to drive up here to Kansas City to help me get my car running after swapping dozens of lengthy e-mails. I couldn't justify that though...

I have a cc306 cam in it. The car ran like crap before i put the delteq in it. Why would a cam cause it to run like this. Honestly i dont think it is related to the Delteq.

I agree, but my car still doesn't run right. I've given up; my car is in the shop right now.

BTW, I have the most mild comp "extreme" cam.

I was only curious. Delteq had similar problems with a 94 Roadmaster LT1 during beta testing, which had an LT4 hotcam -- which is what I'm running. Pete and I were wondering if cams somehow affect this.

I talked to Bob Bailey briefly, and he said that the added noise of heavier spring-pressures/larger cams/roller rockers somehow gets picked up at the opti-box and screws with the optical sensor signal (-thus screwing with the operation of the coil conversion). At least with the LTCC (which has some form of switch to 'tune out' the problem). Though, it wouldn't surprise me if a similar phenomenon could occur with the Delteq.

I'm not saying that you and I have the same problem. My symptoms are quite different from yours.

Ok, so im slowly trying to diagnose this problem:

NOT:
EGR (tested and cleaned out)
MAF (wont even run with out it)
Plugs (New)
Wires (New)
Delteq (problem before swap)
Intake leak
Oxygen Sensors (runs like crap in open loop too)

Possible:
MAP (this one possible because it wont run w/o the MAF. Makes me suspicious if it runs worse in SD)
PCV (strange sound comes from drivers side)
Mechanical Problem (valve, springs, rings ....)
TPS
Opti sensor
Vacuum Leak

Thats about all i can think about. Any thoughts?

BTW: No codes thrown at all.

How recently did you install this camshaft? Did the vehicle ever run correctly on the new cam? I take it you have since reprogrammed your computer?

If this problem started after a cam swap, the most common problems are maladjusted valves or misaligned optisparks.

I would spray some carb cleaner around the intake manifold if you suspect vacuum leaks; However, the CC306 camshaft will usually have lower vacuum to begin with. Again, I would assume your not running on stock programming.

The TPS can be tested with a volt meter if you back-probe the electrical connection with a few needles. This could also be used to test the MAP, as well as any damage to the wires within the MAF.

Have you tested your fuel pressure? Are you running stock injectors?

The problem started long after the cam install.

The computer has been reprogrammed by Madwolf.

Stock injectors.

Fuel pressure is pretty good from last time i checked it. It has an AFPR, but ill check whats goin on when i drive around.

Ok i also found that the tube that goes from the manifold to the optispark had been melted by my headers.

This tube, the one from the elbow to the opti plus this one was also melted (the one from the manifold to the optispark.

Would this cause my car to run like this, possibly ruin the opti sensor?

Burnt Hoses

It will cause one hell of a vacuum leak, and vacuum leaks make 'um run real bad. Replace them and see what it runs like, got to be better.

ok im fixing that vacuum tube for the opti. Ill let you know how it goes. Could that be why my opti went out?
