DEFINITE cost of a rebuild!

A couple more questions, I know I'm aggravating Ok, I did a search on what it costs to rebuild an LT1. COMPLETELY STOCK REBUILD. However, I read so many conflicting answers that it drove me crazy. I couldn't find the cost ofa completely stock rebuild for ****, all of it was including extra machine work, 355, 383, etc etc. Someone told me in my other thread that the rebuild to make it 355 would be 2500.00, is that everything included? How about COMPLETELY STOCK. That is probably what I have to go for considering my budget. I have called around and everyone gives me very different answers, they say depending on how bad it is it can cost from $1800 to $4000.00. $4000.00?!?!?! I understand it's rebuilding an engine but damn, that sounds excessive for a stock rebuild. As far as I know the heads are not cracked, so what is the TOTAL cost of a completely stock rebuild + labor? Keep in mind I am in South Carolina...

I don't think your question can be answered. Prices vary. Too many variables. If you want definite prices, get quotes on assembled short blocks.

First off, check this out.

As for your rebuild, no one can tell you what you'll wind up paying, maybe some can quote their costs. But that's not necessarily going to be what you get done..

After going through all the local shops and trying to get a basic 355 rebuild here, I threw in the towel and ordered a 355 short block from a paying advertiser on this board who had the background I was looking for. It's not cheap ($2500), but I was not comfortable with any of the shops local to me, they were dirty and didn't seem too eager for the work. Almost like I was being a PITA by simply asking all the questions I had.

I think you're going to have to do the leg work and find a shop either online or local to you that you feel comfortable with. The price? Who knows these days.

As far as the parts go:
Having the block hot-tanked, bored .030 over (355), and align honed = $180 and a two-week turn-around time

Summit rebuild kit for LT1 = $5xx.xx, comes with everything you need(gaskets, bearings, pistons, rings, freeze plugs)

Having pistons pressed on your connecting rods = $30-$40

Polishing crank - easy to do yourself

have your crank and rods checked out.

My buddy and me did all the labor ourselves

If you want new roller lifters (not a bad idea) Comp R's are around $300 (not for sure), make sure your cam is alright.

ARP bolts for the rods and heads $???
someone will be able to help you fill in the blanks

depending on the labor cost, it probably will cost you around $2000-$2500

as with anything, the labor is what is gonna kill you. The price varies alot depending on what parts you get, on how extreme of a rebuild you are doing, and what shop you go to. I would do it myself personally. You learn alot, and save yourself alot of money plus the peice of mind that you know everything was done best of your ability. Im gonna go for the forged kit from summitt and just do it all myself while adding in port and polished heads, new cam, and all the extras.

I went with the forged kit too, only thing I had a problem with was the cam bearings.

And you do learn A LOT

Most people don't rebuild to a stock sized motor. When your re-doing it you want it stronger than before. Plus the pistons are going to rub more one two sides of the cylinders than the other two(if you break it down to a square) it makes them oval shaped, refered to as "out of round". When you bore the block over you get rid of that. But like said before the cheapest it could be would be around a 1k which you would need to put everything back together and would only be paying for the machining costs and parts. Otherwise firgure 2-3k, there are many variables. good luck

Im in the process of getting mine rebuilt right now. All said and done the machine shop charged me 1700 with forged pistons, the rebuild kit, and everything else was stock parts. the shop charged me 1100 to take it out tear it down and put it back in. So all in all 2800 for me. But it was said before nobody knows whats in your motor, my machine qoute was 850 and you see what it turned out to be. And the turn around time is about 4 weeks.

I went into my rebuild, knowing that it wasn't going to be stock. Ended up WAY over what I anticipated. Instead of in it for $4K, I'm in it for just over $6K now. Plan on spending a considerable amount more than what you think.

You did kind of ask an unanswerable question though. There's so many factors that play into the cost of a motor, but with a stock rebuild, you should only have to spring for new pistons, rings, bearings, oil pump, and small stuff. It could probably be done for <$2500 easy.
