Dead on the highway...3rd Time
ok, this is the third time this has happened to me...each time is very similar. So far no luck on anyone responding, but if anyone has the slightest idea please let me know what you think. Last nights occurence went as follows:
Driving car for about 20 minutes on a moderatly crowded divided highway w/ traffic lights..so some stop and go but it is running fine. It's dry out, no rain, the gauges indicate everything is fine, temp normal, etc. I'm on a stretch cruising at about 60 mph..all the sudden the motor cuts out, I coast down and cut into an empty parking lot. I attempt to restart the motor 4 or 5 times in the first 10 minutes. Each time, it fires for about a second or two then dies. I sit in desperation for about 20 or 30 minutes, debating to call for a tow. I decide to give it a try, it starts and runs ok, I shut it off and on a couple times and again it runs ok.
I decide to make a run for home and hope I don't end up in an unfortunate circumstance - luckily I don't. It runs fine on the way home and the next time I start it.
Anyone have an idea?? I can't really take the car anywhere for fear of being stranded again (at random).

I had a similar thing happen to me but it wouldn't start back up at all. I was just cruising along and all of a sudden it just quit. It ended up being my ICM (ignition control module). You should check shoebox's website for troubleshooting on finding out why it won't start.

same thing happened to me ....car would randomly die ...btu it would start back up....only a few times it wouldnt start up .....sometimes it would run really rough at idle and then just die....hesitate really bad under load....then teh next day it will run fine
i gto my plugs and wires changed out about 3 or 4 days ago.....car isrunning smoooth...havent had a problem....my throttle response is much better and car feel like it pull better....not to mention my #8 plug was f-ed like hell and teh othres were gapped at like .65
if u hadnt changed ur plugs and wires....do so and c where that takes ya
but thats just my problem
other things to check if u hadnt
opti
ICM/Coil
fuel filter
ignition switch
how is ur voltage readings.....i hear a bad alternator or bad connections will cause ur car to run funky

Opti, plugs, & waterpump were all done about 5-6 yrs ago, although probably only about 25K in mileage, don't drive it too much.
I just replaced the fuel filter, thought that was a possiblity because it looked like it was never changed.
I'm not exactly sure - where is the ICM?? Is it an expensive replacement?

My car used to do that... it was the Altinator...
Get it checked out...
After letting the car sit for a while... it would start up fine too... just like your saying... Then cut off... just like your saying... acted the exact same way... The reason it kept hapening is because my cure was running almost solely off my battery becasue my Altinator wasn't charging the system. My car would shut off randomly and I would have to let it sit for a while like 20-30 minutes ... then she would regain the strength to start up again...
Just hop into auto Zone.... for a free checkup

I've had the same thing happen to me on two seperate occasions. The first time it was the ICM, the second time it was the opti. With the ICM it seemed to be heat related--it would run until the engine reached a certain temp and then shut off. If i let it cool off, it would restart. When my opti went out it was just random. It would run until some random time, then it would die and not restart. Sometimes it took a few minutes to get it start back up, sometimes a few hours. With both cases, my car would set a trouble code. If you can scan it, that might help you figure it out. Hope that helps.

To set the trouble code it has to put on the service engine light right?
I'll have to check the voltmeter out for alternator...doesn't seem like that's it. Sounds more like the ICM issue...I was thinking it was possibly when it reached a certain temp. How hard is it to put in the ICM, and how much??

I never got the light. When this happened before I was also having an issue wiht the SES light coming on after about 1 hr or so of continuous driving. After breaking down once (same thing., 1st occurence) I brought it to a local garage...they analyzined the code and said it could be the EGR, they replaced it. Next day...dead on the hiway again, so it wasn't that. No light sine then, but I haven't driven it that long at once cause it keeps breaking down.

1993Z28LT16SPD, sounds like it could be the fuel pump, too. It can get hot and quit. Then, when it cools down, it will work again. Only thing is, you must have a gauge with you to test the pressure when it is not starting. That's the only way to prove it.

ok, I forgot to tell you that. Last summer I was stranded again..totally dead, had it flatbedded and looked at. Guess what, it wat the fuel pump. $800 later it ran fine...for a while. Could it really be that again? That would suck, because how can I prove it is really that?

Mine did that a few times a couple of years ago....turned out I had forgotten to put a new belt on the thing. Apparently my FC1000 ignition is touchy to voltage and that did it! For the record, I believe I had 30k miles or so on the belt myself, may have been more than that but I didn't own the car until 42k miles were on it.
