I was also thinking of doing the same thing, or just taking and cutting it down and making a notch and putting some bolts through it so I could use like a Lou's short stick. I don't know.

If I remember right, the stick is aluminum. Which is softer than steel, so I don't think you have to worry about that. Finding a metric tap that big might be a problem like you said. Or you could go to one of those aftermarked shifter ***** that use allen set screws

My ripper was steel.

Here is the specs on it,
B&M Sport Shifters are engineered to substantially shorten the shifter throw in your Firebird. Smooth, precise shifts along with extremely durable components will provide trouble free shifts for hundreds of thousands of miles. CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) machined from 303 stainless steel and 6061-T6 aluminum, these shifters will provide the type of strength and performance you demand. We're so positive this is the highest quality shifter we're willing to back it up with a 1-million-mile warranty.
Key Features

* Fits all Pontiac Firebirds with T-56 from 1993-2002
* Shift throw reduced by 30% for quicker shifts
* Stainless steel stick
* 6061-T6 Billet aluminum base
* Neutral stick position may be adjusted for driver preference
* Direct bolt on installation
