Cutouts
I really appreciate all the help you've been giving me guys/gals! On many boards, the people are all jerks and they just yell "USE THE SEARCH BUTTON", even though ANSWERING THE QUESTION would be just as easy as posting "use the search button". Plus, its hard to always find the EXACT answer using the search button.
Anyway, What exactly are CutOuts? I've owned a 2001 Mustang, a 1971 Olds Cutlass, and now I'll own a 1993 Trans Am, and I've never heard this term before coming to this site. Its talked about ALOT here.
What is a cutout, how hard is it to make it/install it/whatever it, and whats the costs? How does it help performance?
Thank you!!

here ya go: http://www.quicktimeperformance.com/qtec.htm
that should give you an idea of what they are.
its basically an exhaust "dump" which bypasses the muffler and allows the exhaust to exit after the cat.
i personally LOVE the sound, other dont. its probably the best $30 i have ever spent on the car! you do not NEED the electric cutout, that would only be if you wanted to be able to open/close the cutout from inside the car. i left mine open all the time, so i didnt see the point of spending another $100.
hope that helped!
and also.... if you search you will finds tons of info reguarding which is better, and HP gains, and stuff like that!!

Thanks for explaining it to me!
What does the sound sound like? Also, how hard would it be to get a shop to install those cutoffs for me? I don't have a welder or a lift, so I can't do it here.
For stock 1993 TA, I'd need to buy the "doubles" right? Or just two cutoffs? Any difference? What sizes?
Thanks again

If you still have stock exhaust just get one 3" cut-out. It's hard to explain the sound but its definately ballsier. Mine kinda sounded like a diesel truck kinda with a nice V8 tone to it, if that helps any. You could install it the way me and my friend did by cutting the section of pipe underneath the passenger side back seat where it goes up but leave enough pipe to go into the cut-out about 1.5" or so and you can slip it on and clamp it. Most people prefer bringing it to Midas or someplace like that and spending $40 to weld it but the way I did it worked fine for me.

I have ran mine open 99% of the time for the last 2 years
Never once have I ever been pulled over because of it, or bothered by cops from it.
I did get a Quick time cutout opener a month ago, because my wife doesn't like to ride in the car with it open, and I figured that I wanted to close it when around a cop, in case they wanted to start bugging me about it.
There are pictures of my e-cutout opener in the link in my signature on page 2.
Have fun!

Yeah a cutout is a "Y" looking pipe. When closed your exhaust system works normal, the ehaust exits out of your muffler. When its open, it exits through the dump tube prior to being filtered through your muffler, so its louder. And yes, when mine is open I still get some exhaust out of my tips. I love my cutout and the noise is a deep throaty noise. Its loud, but not loud enough to get ticketed because I leave mine open only on days ending in Y, excpet the time i had to get the MARO smogged, i closed it then haha. I have the DMH Performance electronic cutout, that way I can open and close it from the inside of my car electronically. This is convienant becuase other wise I would have to jack my car to take the lid on and off. I mean I never close it but when i do screw climbing unser the car! My friend on the other hand has a lifted truck and has a manual one, which works great for him becuase its easy to take on and off. If you get an electronic one, for sure visit http://www.dmhperformance.com/ and talk to Dave. He does good business and has a great product. Good luck! oh yeah and by the way your gonna need the 3" cutout no matter if you mount it after the cat or before the cat. And you will only need one cutout if its for a street application.
