Cut-Out Pros/Cons

What are some of the pro's and cons of a cut out ? I was thinking of ripping my flowmaster off , selling it, putting the stock back on ( Love the stock tips ) and then buying one of the electric cut outs ... Not many mods , a few of the free ones and a cai, however there will be many more to come in the future ( Heads Cam RR the basic top end overhaul ) and instead of buying a full exhaust I thought the idea of flipping a switch for great flow sounded good too me. Also on a 95 single cat LT1 what all would i need to put in a cut out ? Prices ?

^best way to go^

i got mine from www.ls1speed.com with a 3" flowtech cutout for $169.99.

it costed $30 to have welded in place, and running the wire for the switch is a simple 30 minute job.

Pro's: Loud Rumble, .15 sec and 1.5mph gain for me...
Con's: ummm.... I dunno...

I just got the 30$ cutout from summit and had a friend weld it in place of my cat when I put on my headers, takes 10 sec to take the cap off/on... Even with the cap on it still sounds good through the stock muffler with headers/no cat

one of the cons is that it is a bit more of a cop magnet, as if we need MORE reasons for the cops to pull us over. there is also a lot of interior resonance with it open when daily driving. although this wouldn't be such a problem since you'll have an electric cap that you can close easier.

it will definately give you a good gain specially with a stock exhaust system.

The only real downside I found when I had a cutout was that I lost about 1 - 1.5 inches of ground clearance. That may not seem like a big deal, but after I installed headers it made that part of the i-pipe hang even lower. If I were you I'd consider putting the cutout just after the bend over the axle right before the i-pipe goes into the muffler.

I didn't lose any ground clearance at all. I installed mine in the hump in the floorboard just before the rear axle. My cat is still the lowest hanging part of my exhuast, coming off soon . There will be some resonance when windows are all up, but with tops off and windows down, sounds awesome!

Pros: Great sound, decent bang for your buck mod
Cons-, a bit expensive (like $150 plus weld for electric), cop magnet, I lost a little MPG because I rev my engine a bit more, my track doesn't allow them on street night

I think it's worth it just for the sound, but beware of cops!

Cons:
- Interior rattles and "loose" parts will pop-up because of the massive amounts of sound vibration.
- Sound resonance between 1500 and 2500 is almost unbearable inside the vehicle (on the LT1 at least)
- Forget having a conversion with passengers unless you're on the freeway cruising at low RPMs.
- If you're running rich, depending on the location of the cutout, the bottom of you're car and everything under the back of your car will soon become "soiled" with carbon deposits.
- Sound resonance is very annoying
- If you don't have cats, it's CRAZY LOUD.
- Ground clearance
- Any cop within 3 city blocks will soon stop for a conversation regarding "sound polution".
- Some car enthusiasts consider it the "white trash" exhaust system (not me, but I've heard this numerous times from spectators at various car shows).
- Did I forget to mention the sound resonance in the car with the windows up and the tops in?

Pros:
- Sounds wicked when you romp on it.
- People often look and ask "what do you have in that thing".
- Cheap way to a wild sounding exhaust
- Depending on existing mods, a 5-15hp power increase with some loss of torque (more noticable if your exhaust is stock).

Honest Opinion after having one installed: Nice for the track, but for daily driving you'll be much happier with a nice cat-back system like the Borla, Corsa, B&B, GMMG, Hooker, etc.

I forgot the maaaaaaad rattling. It's wicked annoying, but worth it ......I can never have change in the little thingie because of all the noise it makes.

And my dog can hear me coming a half mile away....I think that's a pro because I always have someone there to greet me!

love the sound, no cops yet

rumbling inside the car is not very nice sometimes, makes your car seems slower when actually it goes faster.

mad ratteling is a PRO if u think about it this way

my xGF wouldnt let me close the thing she absolutely LOVED my cutout she didnt care if there are 10 cops around the block .. she'd reach for the switch and open it up as soon as she got in the car

and everytime i went WOT for a few seconds she'd close her eyes and ask me to pull over and .... nevermind .. forgot this is a PG13 forum

thats the biggest pro imo ...

i havent had any trouble with the cops and i run with mine open all teh time but if you have headers it is a lot louder and you probably will draw some attention. and here on our friday night street legal drags we arent aloud to use them either. but it is all worth the sound if you dont want to put out for an exhaust right now
