A search will uncover lots of useful information on heads
The most common and best bang-for-the-buck cylinder heads are well ported stockers (LT1 and LT4). If you need more potential than this, and you probably don't at this point, the most popular aftermarket heads are those from AFR. They make LTx heads in a variety of port volumes to suite your needs. Canfield *did* make LTx heads but they are rare finds. Edelbrock recently started making heads for these engines as well. There are also some wild 4-valve Arao heads. It is also possible to convert regular SBC heads to be used on the LT1.
Even the aftermarket heads need some massaging to perform at their best. If you figure the price for heads and the price to port them you better have a serious engine. Professionally ported stock casting will outperform most out of the box aftermarket heads, and they will do it with less investment.
