custom cai?

a friend of mine has a custom cai that he made out of 3in tube from lumber store.

anyhow I have g2 gigliotti cold air on my car right now and its real boxy and kinda has a bend too it.

so would i notice any gain or anything by putting the straight pipe in there since it would'nt restrict the air as much?

either way just looking to make it best as possible

I don't think it will help out much, if any. It is just the basic concept. As long as there isn't a crack in it, I doubt it is hurting anything. I think people do it for budget reasons and if they want to make it look custom(colored, chrome, etc.) go to this site and check it out...I am about to do it and others that have done it say it works well.

the elbow ont he G2 unit isn't really the restriction. it's the air box that it uses that is said to flow lesss than other CAI systems such as the k&n or morosso.

what i've been planning on doing is eliminating the entire box, putting a large k&n cone filter with a 3.5" outlet onto the G2 elbow (part that goes around the corner of the radiator). i'm also planning on putting a divider behind it so that it's not pulling air in from the engine bay. that way it will be very similar to the other cai's but the filter won't be down in the wheelwell so far.

just a thought

That's not a bad idea, and you won't have to worry about pulling in water from the wheel well. What I did though was take the front cover of the airbox and cut it so that it's open. Instead of having that little hole to breathe through, now it can use the entire surface area of the filter.

the whole face of my air box is LONG gone. but if you look at the back part of the box, say toward the botom of the filter, the air has to come through the filter than turn 90degrees in about a 1" space before it can enter the actual tube...not very effecient. that's why i think i'm gonna do the cone filter, nice smooth flow from all areas of the filter...

and it'll look cooler specially with the "block off"

i was also thinking of takinga small hole saw and putting some breather holes in the splash guard, just to help draw more cool air in. since the filter is up so high, you wouldn't have to worry bout water getting sucked up so bad like you would if the filter were in the wheel well like on the k&n/morosso units.

food for thought

Are you going to use the stock/G2 elbow? If so, let me know what K&N that fits on the end of it, and what you used to make the block off. I never thought of doing something like that, and it would be a great idea because we get a lot of rain and I don't want to risk it.

i found a filter at Discount Auto Parts once, with a 3.5" inlet to fit over the G2 elbow. it was about 9" long and maybe 5" in diameter. it was about $50 and i was broke at the time so i didnn't buy it. i think it's a pretty regularly available filter (harder to find the 3.5" inlet, lots of 3" one out there )

then i was going to use some cardboard as a template for the "block off" since it's bendable and easily trimmable (and cheap), then i was going to use some 1/16" plastic or similar for the final product.

i was thinking i would just make a single vertical piece, that kindda seals against the hood (maybe use some weather stripping to really make a seal). that way you could see the filter when the hood is up (think it'll look ) and it will be easier to make.

i'm probably going to be doing this soon, if i can find the filter.
i'll let you know how it turns out...

here's a link to the cone filters in jegs

i have to do some research as to exactly what the flange style is. some come with the outlet like what's pictured on the page, with area for a clamp, others don't have that...so i'm not sure which one is which.

I have driven my car in the rain with no problems. I don't generally drive my Z on a lot of dirt roads, though
