Custom BRE cam

I was wondering if it would be worth getting a custom cam, while keeping the stock converter and stock shift points.I was thinking a BRE cam but did not want to PM him just yet because i do not want to waste his time until i am sure this is what i want to do.Now i am not after the fastest et,if i was i would get a converter and all the other go fast stuff,i just want as much power that can be squeezed out of the engine with out reving it any higher.I would think that the stock cam leaves alot to be had because of all the compermises that the factory makes for emissions and fuel mileage which are not a concern to me.

I'm lucky and have a 6 speed but from everything i've read, it seems that if you want a decent cam you need a stall.

Yeah i agree, but this is a street racer,i know guys with manuel trannies and high stall autos and traction is always a issue on the street and the cheap converters are junk and the high dollar ones require traction devices and it just gets to expensive and i just want something fast without spending a huge amount of money.Someday yes i will get all that stuff but not right now.

A few months back, I started a thread on same exact topic. The Crane 227 was frequently recommended (as was a custom cam).

There is torque and power to be had with a cam and valvetrain change, but you leave a lot on the table if you need torque at 1700. Discuss it with Bret (BRE). You are in approximately the same boat (pun intended) as I am with an LT1 Impala SS with a stock converter and 3.08s. Bret and I have discussed this situation a few times.

In order to make this work, the cam will probably be quite aggressive and fairly high lift, but without too much duration. That will mean a complete valvetrain: lifters (maybe), pushrods, rockers, springs and retainers.

As I said, talk to Bret.

Only 5 posts in 7 years......you must read alot
Bret is easy enough to talk to....i'm sure he wouldn't mind giving you a few words of advice. You should have a litlle bit of converter, most cammed cars get alot of surge and tug on the brakes at idle, a small converter smooths it out

Yeah i agree with you on the converter end of it,but there are alot of small cams out there that work fine with a stock converter,i just think bret could do better,i realize that a custom is more expensive but better.I guess i should not have said i want max power,i guess i want as much as can be had without having driveability issues, and i am only thinking about this, that is why i did not get in touch with bret him self,i figure he will see this post when he has time and will give his opinion` and i am pretty sure there are others on here who have done this also. But i like hearing what everyone thinks so thanks to everyone for the replies.

FWIW I've done designs for Lloyd lately working on a full new line of cams, not because the old ones don't work but to provide more cams for more customers needs. I only have the 350-355 cams designed working on the stroker cams, probably have them all ready for springtime.

Anyways the cam range anywhere from:
1500-5800rpm
2000-6000rpm
2500-6250rpm
2800-6400rpm
3200-6500rpm
3600-6750rpm
4000-7000rpm

Obviously the first two would work well with a stock stall and higher gears (3.08 etc.) The first two are also would be compared to a Crane 227 and Hot Cam but the design criteria was that they should trounce them in average power. I've started working on smaller designs for trucks(5.3L Ls motors) and impalas so you fit right in there.

Back when I was an auto with a stock stall, I went from 13.0's @104 1.91 60' to 12.5@111 1.86 60' with a slipping tranny on the stock converter just swapping from the stock cam to the crane 227 and 3.73's. I'm sure with a custom cam you'll gain more, but I'm just showing you that you can run decent times with the stock stall if you don't overcam it and I'm sure Bret won't.

Thanks,i knew someone has had to have done this.I love the way the cars works now,but would like just a little more,i have had the car now for 7 years and all mods were done in the first 2 years and i have done nothing since except for the dynaspark last summer.I am not sure about doing the cam but i have been thinking about it,i already have a new timing set and all the gaskets because i was going to do it 4 years ago but never got around to getting a cam.
