crankshaft position sensor?

I have a crankshaft position sensor code tripping my service engine soon light. I have replaced the CP sensor, and it still trips the code. I also have a 96 LT1 which has the cps reluctor ring, if that helps any.

My question is what can be causing this and does this code affect driveability at all?

Any ideas would be great

Thanks

Joe

Re: crankshaft position sensor?

It wont affect driveability at all, its only used for misfire detection.

I dont know much else about them, hopefully someone else will chime in.

On the LT1, the crank sensor has nothing to do with engine control as atljar said. You can even run the engine without one. Most other cars will not run without it.

If there was some sort of problem with the wiring or sensor that caused interference on the pink/black lead back to the PCM, then it might cause a driveability problem.

96birdlt1: make sure the pink wire to the sensor has 12v with the key ON. If necessary, you might have to check the continuity of the other two wires back to the PCM. You also need to state what DTC you are getting.
