Question Crankshaft bolt removal problem

I'm in the process of trying to remove the 3 bolts on the crank pulley in order to access the optispark. However, I can't torque the bolt enough to loosen before the crank rotates. (The car is in park/accessory belt is still on)

Anyone ever run into this problem? Is there anyway I can either lock the crank completely or shock the bolts loose?

I could tell you several creative ways to do it

Over the years....being in a shop time=money so sometimes I would do this...keep in mind its probly isn't safe or recommended.....put a breaker bar and a pipe on it....brace it against the frame or ground...bump the starter

we used to do it all the time.....an bump the started...unplug the ICM or something so it wont start......

Like I said its not the greatest way...but if your at home or in your driveway with limited access to tools and stuff....It will work, make sure you have it braced the right way so it won't break your arm or take your head off.

If you could get a chrystler puller from autozone or somewhere...just pull the whole thing of as a unit too....whatever works for you, the chrystler kits come with the 3 different length inserts that go in the center bolt hole also...one of them works perfect

Good luck

You could soak them in WD40 or PB blaster-might help. I didn't have any problem when I did this. Now getting the balancer hub off...that was a different story.

well try this then...if you dont have an impact...put a wrench on it and tap it with a hammer....it will break the rust loose, after you soak it in PB blaster..........

Just stick something sturdy in between the spokes and wedge it against something safe on the motor or frame. It won't take much.

Yet another reason why automotive "techs" will never touch my car. What... you people didn't own a god damned impact gun?
Hey lets pay some dolts $60-$100 an hour for them to tear **** up on my car. Yay!

man I would never do it that way unless I had to....your right though it is a terrible thing to do and the stuff that goes on is bad...you do know about 70% of that goes to the shop anyway, so most techs dont care

And yes I own about 5 impacts....the original IR 2131, the titanium and a few bigger ones.....

I was just trying to give him a way he could get it off easily.....I figured this was a shade tree job anyway

well **** those bolts are stuck on there

I put a bar between the swaybar and frame near the radiator, wrench on one bolt that was wedged against that bar, then tried to turn another with a rachet...with my dad pulling and me pushing...no luck

time to get a cheater bar & big hammer ...then if that doesn't work move on to borrowing one buddies air compressor and anothers impact

The last time I took a crank pulley off I took a crowbar, left the belt on the car, and wedged the crow bar in between the belt and the pulley so it wouldn't move. Then they came right off....but that wasn't on my Z. Good luck.

I have done this a few times now. I usually use the handle side of a hammer because its rubber coated and slide it through. Then I use my torque wrench (or breaker bar on the wrench) and snap them loose. It should really be easy if you just but something through like these guys suggest. If you still cant get it you must not be pushing hard enough because you should either get them loose or they should snap off! So just use a little muscle and be smart about it.

BTW how do u like your pacesetter headers? I'm considering them for my '94 and would like to know hard are they to install? Any problems accessing the sparkplugs?
Thanks

I didn't install the pacesetters myself, dads friend owns a muffler shops that did the install + custom y-pipe + hi flow cat for under 500. They made the exhaust sound different in a good way. When I installed them they didn't make much of a difference...but after I changed the fuel pump the car was faster then ever. (fuel pump was going for a long time that was killing my performance, havn't had it to the track since)

I only had problems 1 time out of 5 taking it off. The way I took the bolts out without it spinning was by putting a bar on the teeth of the flywheel so it wouldnt turn! Damn bolts came off in seconds...
