Crank wont turn

I am installing a new transmission. I have finger tightening all the flywheel to torque converter bolts no problem. But once I start to torque them down, I can not get the crank to turn?

ANy ideas on what the problem is? Seems like it should turn regardless of how tight the flywheel bolts are. I dont what to break anything so I decided to stop.

Thanks for any help or ideas.

Edge 9.5" converter to a rebuilt 4l60e transmission. Stock flywheel.

How are you trying to turn the crank? Via a 5/8" socket on the crank hub bolt?

I was but that feels like I am torqueing it down too much. I dont want to break that damn crank hub bolt.

It is ok to torque that down so much while turning the crank?

Thanks in advance.

Try turning the flywheel with a big screwdriver or better yet a flywheel tool.

I am almost positive that the torque converter is all the way in. I check it about 10 times before I put the transmission up and it turns fine before I tightening the flywheel bolts down. Any way to double check that?

Can I get a flywheel tool locally?

Is there anyway to turn the crank and prevent breaking the crank hub bolt?

Thanks for the help.

Try your local auto parts store, especially the bigger NAPA stores. If not, I actually got mine from Harbor Freight.

I will try harbor freight, they never let me down.

thanks for the help

also should I use a socket as a spacer and remove the crank hub bolt, put the spacer/socket in there and try and turn it then? Is this considered a safe way to turn the crank? I will be laying on my back while I turn it.

I don't think you will be able to put anything behind the crank hub bolt.

When you pull the converter up to the flywheel to be able to bolt it up, does it go on straight or does it seem to hang-up before the ears touch the flexplate? If you are having to pull the converter to the flexplate, something is wrong and you need to see what is causing the hang-up.

No, nothing is hanging up at all, it just seems a lot tougher to turn once i torque on the the flywheel bolts down, other than that everything seems fine.

On the flywheel tool from harbor freight. Do you have a part #? I stopped by there at lunch and they didn't know what I was talking about and I couldn't find one. Pics anything to show them once I get there.

I have *never* had an issue with turning the engine over with a 5/8" on a 1/2" breaker bar with plugs in. I've worked on alot of these...

It's not *easy* but it's not so tough that I'm putting more torque on the bolt than the bolt is tightened down to.

Something else is wrong if the engine is that tight to turn.

I will try to turn it more, it is hard to tell how much torque I am apply lying on back with my arms in the air. I will try again with a torque wrench tonight when I get home and see what happens.

Thanks for the help and any more ideas keep them coming.

I have done this tons of times. Don't turn the motor over using the hub. You are just over tightening the hub bolt. Using a mid sized pry bar move the flywheel around and tighten one TQverter bolt at a time. You will only be able to move the flywheel a inch at a time. Do each bolt and you should be done.

Unless you want to pull all the plugs, but F that!

Use a mid sized breaker bar and stick it into the flywheel and turn it with that? I might give that a try as well.

thanks
