Crank Pulley
Crank Pulley
Hey guys, I've been fussing over this thing for a while and am wondering how you remove the Crankshaft pulley. Everywhere I've read says to use a claw-type pulley puller, so I went out and rented one, but my pulley looks different than all the other pics I've seen too, so I took some pics.
This is the front

This is the rear

This is a bad picture of the middle

As you can see there are actually 2 pulleys on top of each other. I forgot the previous owner had put an underdrive pulley on there. The belt wraps the smaller silver one. I reached in the hole where the middle of the claw goes and felt a bolt in there. Should I remove this bolt or leave it and just use the claw to pull the pulleys off? Thanks guys, just don't want to break anything

Re: Crank Pulley
The bolt in the center is holding the steel hub on the crankshaft. Do not remove it.
The U/D pulley is mounted by "sandwiching" it between the hub and the stock Damper/pulley, using longer versions of the 3 bolts that hold the stock pulley to the hub.
Have you tried simply removing the three bolts? The damper/pulley is not in interference fit. Its a loose fit on the hub, but sometimes requires a puller because of the large amount of rust that builds up between the hub and the damper. Your U/S pulley appears to be aluminum, so there shouldn't be a lot of rust holding everything together.
Your pulley may look different than others because the early years look like the one in your photo, the later years have a large triangular center that incoporates the "arrow"

Re: Crank Pulley
Actually, the one in my photo is the early one, too. 96-97s had the pulley with the smaller holes for using a puller on them (noted in the lower left of this diagram).
Re: Crank Pulley
I tried a puller from autozone but it was too small to reach the outside of the pulley. Could I use a rubber mallet on the back of pulleys to pry them loose a little?
