I just finished reading that article to. Little confused though. Does it work with the opti, or replace it. Or is it just a coil pack or something?

Thumbs down

I did also read that article & if I'm going to spend appox. $500. there better be a 10-20 hp increase. I don't belive this can happen with set up !

500$? I thought the article said it was ~250$. I've found it online for less than 200$. But, since they were unable to include the dyno chart I will hold off on judgements until next issue.

The article said 250 for the box plus about 200 for a trigger channel required on obdII, and I think it would be a great upgrade.

yeah read it here and think GMHT didn't plan the project well at all, they get you going on why and how it's so good (bias in that their comparisons were internal) and then the car couldn't hit the dyno. Which in itself was kind of stupid, heres an idea, it's called BENCHMARK, dyno the car stock prior the mod...oooh that makes sense...then dyno the car after the mod...wow...you mean GM HighTech didn't think of that...sheesh. And even still they didn't hit the dyno. I'd say if it's all that as they stated then it would be worth maybe converting to ODB1 as well, to keep from buying the Trigger Box.

I didn't initially see that T/A #4 had a 97. I have a 94 so when I read the article I didn't care about the extra parts for OBDII.

why? based on the fact it was in a mag with no hard facts or data to prove it was "all that"? I mean really what would be nice is for an un-biased Consumer Reports type test be done with Accel, Jacobs, MSD, Crane and test their ignition systems on the same car on a dyno, track, whatever at least in a manner where it's consistently going to show you a true benchmark on why it's better than stock, etc. The givens are things like MSD and ability to control timing with mega-power adders 200+ nitrous, turbo, SC's, etc, otherwise these ignition mods are expensive mods which do not provide much if any value, until your pushing mega-hp.

Crane Hi-6 with OBD1 conversion

With the OBDI conversion on a 97Z can I use the Hi-6 and avoing the expense for the trigger box? I want to get a Hi-6 but will it work after my mod. Anyone using this setup together? I thought it odd in the GMHTP article didnt say anything about upgrading the coil or testing it. Need some words of wisdom b4 the $$ goes.

NO trigger channel required for OBD2. Just use the usual trigger wire off the ICM. It's been awhile ('99?) since I installed mine, but I was on the phone with them since their instructions show the use of the trigger channel however I was informed that it was not and indeed is not necessary. It works fine, even after OBD1 conversion, dont know about any gains but the idle is smoother and the built-in stagging rev limiter is very conveinient. Our coils work well with it but mine eventually tested slightly out of spec so I replaced it. DONT get it wet, its worse than the opti.

No it doesnt replace the opti, it is just an addition to the ignition system.

Re: Crane Hi-6 Ignition

Just called crane today. they said the trigger box was $175. I installed my crane box from my 94z on my 96 but was waiting for the new style adaptor harness before seeing the article. Can anyone shed some light on how to make this work without the trigger box. I for one don't think it would be worth it to have to spend the extra money for a couple of mpg. I was thinkng of converting to OBD1 anyway but is it really needed for it to work. Someone please clarify.
