Just kinda curious as to what you guys think about heads that flow too well....is there such a thing? If you get a killer set of heads and say keep the stock cam will it hurt performance? The flow would be there (say 300cfm+) but will the velocity be there?

Also do 383CI engines use different head gaskets than 350CI engines (aren't the cylinders honed)?

I don't know about heads that flow too well, I doubt that's possible. What is possible though is someone buying heads based solely on max flow numbers that could be coming at .600 or more lift, way more than the cams that are being looked at by that person.

 

It's absolutely possible to get too much flow on a head. When you are talking about standard 23 degree SBC stuff, about the only way to get extreme flow from the heads is to go with much bigger intake ports. The problem is that a big intake port doesn't flow as well at low RPM and low lift situation. So you wind up with a head that wants to rev, and a cam that won't. You lose low RPM power because the heads don't work there, and before the heads get into their best operating range, the cam chokes off the engine. The result: No power anywhere.

Yes, I know this is a generalization and not true in some cases, maybe even yours. Just a general rule.
