Could use some help in making a purchase
I've been debating over getting a 97 GT or a 95 z28. The z28 has me sold, but the only thing is that he said it has 100k miles. I've heard these engines last a long time, but is that pushing it?

id say yes the Z is a faster all around better car but i would look elsewhere for one reason...when i look to buy a car i dont want snazzy nice rims and such on it..that to me is a sign that he has probably been beating the **** out of it and it will probably need a lot of attention as soon as you drive it off the lot..i bought a 89GTA when i was 16 and a month later i was knocking a rod...so get it checked out (thorough LT1 check) before you purchase...looks in decent condition though. see what he has maintenanced recently or ever..(tranny...leaks..everything)
good luck...(oh ya never consider buying a GT over a Z unless you like getting smoked)

The miles on the engine won't be a problem. The price he's asking is right on the line of unacceptable. Most here are about a grand less. I can't advise the Ford cause I hate them. I owned too many Fords to like them. The best advice is try the car. Try everything and check oil and water. Let it idle until the fans come on. Make sure it doesn't overheat. Try AC and especially the heat. Most eventually have clogged heater cores that are easily cleaned. Look for SES lights and be sure to cycle the power to the engine at least 2 times. Check the clutch real well. They got the crappiest clutches.
If you buy you will enjoy it thoroughly.

They have bigger support because they need it. Camaro would have a bigger support too if they were putting out less horses than a stock Maxima.
I could be wrong, but I've come to the conclusion that a camaro is a lot of money to keep up with. The gas is one thing, but I'm also realizing that my insurance will sky rocket as well.
When I read on reviews that a z28 has a rougher ride.. is that refering to how loud it is? Is the suspension bad? I heard the clutch is pretty rough.. I'm used to a honda clutch so that could be bad

I just priced a bunch of cars not 8 months ago before I bought my Trans Am...here's how insurance was for a 21 year old with a good driving record and 1 ticket from geico insurance 1415.00 every six months on a 95 mustang GT. 1490.00 on a Cobra. For a 97 GT it was 1530.00 and for a 98 Cobra it was 1780.00. The 96 TransAm was 1340.00. Mine is a 95 and I got a few other discounts worked out to be 1260ish and I checked with more than 11 insurance companies they were the cheapest by a LONG shot. If you're younger it'll be more expensive. The F body's were believe it or not cheaper to insure. They do ride fairly rough but they will handle much better than a stock mustang GT. As for upkeep if the car has been taken care of then its probably ok and will not become a money pit. Someone earlier made the comment that they wouldn't even consider a car with modifications like wheels and other things done I would not rule out anything...I was that way until I had a hunch to check out the car I bought (it had some chrome ugly *** 17's on it) and I hated the wheels still do but you know what....it was the best used F body I have EVER driven and I had 3 or 4 people tell me that and my mechanic said it was the most mechanicaly sound f bod with more than 30k miles he's ever seen (it had 67 on it when I bought it). So far I've put on rear brakes...I'm gonna have to buy tires and put in a clutch next spring but all of that is normal wear and tear items. The GT parts will probalby be more expensive (if its a 4.6) the cars start with a LOT LESS power BUT they are easier to work on...I do however think you'll be very disappointed with the power they offer...I drove one a few years ago when I still had my IROC and it was no stronger then my 87 305 TPI auto car. (it had a few mods nothing major)
Get the GT trust me. The Camaro's are good cars..but they need allot of work to be comfortable...like suspension ETC. The GT is a bit more forgiving. The F-bodies are umcomfortable and annoying at times. I have allot of complaints about them...but I forget about them everytime I mash the pedal down and a smile apears on my face...that's what it's all about with these cars. You've got to be serious about them to appreciate them and be willing to sacrifice a bit to maintain em. Most of the guys on here are about my age 20's or so they know about Eating Ritz Crackers and Couple O noodles everynight because your saving up for a kick *** set of Heads. Just gotta know what it is your looking for I guess.
The question is what are you looking for in a car?
Insurance is a major concern for younger drivers and should be taken into consideration.
If you are going to get a "high-cost" insurance muscle car AND your only choices are between the GT and the Z, then you must already know which one you like better than the other.
And regardless of the measures you use for comparison, if you don't get the one you like best, you will be kicking yourself.
I only have one bit of advice for you, since no one is going to dissuade you from what you want and that is: shop, shop, shop. I.e., look around for the lowest mileage car in the best condition, even if it costs more.
If you buy a car with 100K on the clock, it may be highway miles (which is better than short hops)
on a 50K motor, however, there is a reason why these cars usually only have a 36K/3 yr warranty.
But given the choice between a 100K motor and a 50K motor, even if you pay a grand more, I'd take the 50K everytime.JMHO

If your going to buy a mustang GT don't buy a 97.. do you realize how slow those cars are and how poorly they respond to bolt on modifications? They only have 215hp and run in the 15 second zone.. might as well buy a 97 GTP or an IROC or something.. at least it will be faster.
If you are considering a use mustang with the newer body style either get a 5.0L one or the redesign (99-up I think) but never the crappy early 4.6L's..

i ahve owned both so i'll offer mt advice. i have owned a third gen, then i owned a 94 mustang gt, and now i own 94 camaro z28. pur speed and handling camaro wins hands down. the mustang feels a little tighter but the camaro corners much mucht better. the camaro is ten times ballzier than the mustang. as far as creature comforts go i am gonna go with the mustang on this, the seats are more comfortable and the dash layout is much better, but the camaro has more leg room. if u can get a mustang wiht the mach 460 sound system it will already be sounding good too. i just think the whole interior layout is much better in the mustang the dash is sticking out at you like the camaros and everything is in nice and easy reach.
mechanically the mustang will be easier to work on, half the engin isn't under the dash lmao! tune ups are easier to it wont take you all day to change the spark plugs like on a camaro. parts are cheaper for the mustang, the 5.0 has been around for a long time.
looks is all a matter of opinion personally i go for the camaro always have always will. the mustang looks much too european for my taste.
if you want a fast car that looks good right outta the box go for the camaro. if you want a more comfortable car that is quite a bit slower but very easy to make fast go with the mustang. but only get a mustang that is 95 or older or 99 or newer. 96-98 the mustang was pittiful and the after market just isn't there for those years.
hope i helped some
