My car has been heating up really quick lately. But this only happens when im at a stop, while im moving it goes right back down. I've already replaced the thermostat and waterpump seems fine and I have discovered a leak close to one of the lower hoses. After a closer look i saw that one of the 2 hoses that go to my heater core looked like it was in real bad shape and im thinking about replacing it, and it comes along with a heat control vavle, Could these help my overheating/leaking problem?

 

i would also check your fans and your fan switch.

 

Fans turn on at a certain point so i tihnk those are fine, but ill check them out again. THanks

 

also you might want to check the front of the radiator for debris and blockage. GL

my car started running hotter than usual last summer and at first i thought it was a fan problem. turned out the radiator had some internal blockage that needed to be bored out. it still runs a little hotter because the bastards took off my 160 stat and replaced it with a 180

 

for some reason the GM engineers decided to have the fans turn on at 220*, which for most people seems a little warm. you can reprogram your computer with a hypertech to turn them on at a cooler temp. or you can go the less expensive route and wire a switch to the fans so you can turn them on and off when you want to, thats what i did and the car never sees anything over 190* now a days. if you do the switch do a search on here and you'll find a ton of info and sites on how to do it yourself.

 

i often wondered to why the engineers let the car heat up that much to, almost red line before the fans turned on, that was one of my first mods to programm the fans to turn on quicker, maybe someone can give a better explanation as to why they run very hot

 

Its supposed to heat up when you're stopped (no air is hitting your airdam unless its windy). How high does it rise and how fast? I'd jus tdo what bob94z28 said and just put a switch in.

 

you could be getting some air in to your cooling system. if you had a small hole one of the holes, as it cools and depressurizes, it could be sucking air into the system, causing it to heat up prematurely.

try bleeding the system, after changeing that bad hose of course...

 

Factory fans turn on at 226º. Your car sounds pretty normal to me.

What is this heater control valve you are referring to? The only thing I know of on the heater hoses is a flow restrictor. AFAIK, the 4th gen does not use a heater control valve (normally, a valve attached to a heater hose that stops coolant flow through the heater core, based on the temp setting on the dash).

 

shoebox is right, and a new 'flow restrictor' isn't going to cool it any more than it is now... reprogram the fan temps...
