Car is a 95 Z28 m6 with ported stock heads, comp cam, headers, MSD6AL, etc etc. It has trouble cranking sometimes, actually most times. It also will develop a miss in it but nothing too serious. I pulled the codes and it shows a high res signal. I've not run across that one before. I gotta get off to work but I'll be back in a few with a better description.

 

That code comes from the optispark. The MSD should not be the cause of that. Any time you think your ignition box is causing a problem, you can just unplug it and go back to stock to see if that cures it (easy if you have the optional harness).

 

There has been some discussion on the LT1_Edit lists a while back about the MSD's causing problems and I believe they do not help past 3000 rpm?

 

What kind of problems?

 

Supposedly MSD's were burning up the opti's? Some said they did, some said it couldn't. I know some guys had problems with the MSD's and simply did away with them on fast cars.

I am sure someone will chime in that recalls the discussion.

 

I just looked at mine (10k miles since new) and I did not see anything unusual. MSD 6A been on it the whole time.

 

I heard that it wasn't the 6A boxes that are burning out opti's but the blaster coils.
The box only takes the voltage the stock coil gives it and fires more often.
The blaster coil increases the voltage........and really, the coils on our cars are pretty high performance anyhow. I'll bet the opti can't handle the higher voltage.

 

I did not know the discussion was about the coil. Anyway, I have a Blaster coil as well. The pre 96 coils are said to be not as good as 96-up ones.

 

True, but I believe that upgrading the coils on our cars is uneccesary and harmful to the opti, even the pre 96's.

Opinions vary on this subject and make up for quite a wide field of views.

 

Ok guys, it took me a while to get free here at work and get logged on. The car is setting a code 36 high res pulse circuit and if I let it go long enough it sets a 42 ign control circuit grounded.

I unhooked the msd box
( a 6a) and put it back on the stock system but it still has the msd blaster coil in it and still sets the codes. I'm going to try a new stock coil and connector to see of that doesnt do away with the problem.

 

Mine is not an opinion. It is an observation. I am not seeing any ill effects from the MSD coil or the box.

 

The 6 series MSD boxes aren't burning up anything. You can use the stock coil with these boxes. MSD recommends using a different coil when use the Digital 7 series boxes because they tend to run hotter, not the 6 series. I have a 6AL in my camaro with stock coil and i've had no problems at all.

 

I took the msd box out of the equation and replaced the coil, coil wire and ignition module. Still setting both codes but runs better. I'll start another thread.
