Coolant Smell
Coolant Smell
I changed my water pump six months ago and did a radiator flush, but I am still smelling coolant from the engine after shut down. I don't see any signs of leakage around the hoses. Is there a problem area unique to LT-1's that I should be looking for?
My 88 caprice had a similar issue. I would always smell it after i turned the car off. No one could ever track it down and the car didnt loose collant over time for the most part, so i stopped caring about it. Maybe you have luck like me, as long as your not lossing coolant dont worry too much about it unless it worsens.
I'd go to the autoparts store and rent a radiator pressure tester. They are free with a deposit. Top off the coolant with Distilled Water from the grocery store... not hose water that has deposits. Pressurize it to the rating on the cap and wait. You'll see the drip.
Let us know what you find. Any smell means there is a leak. Even a small leak means that coolant is escaping or another way to put it... it is loosing pressure. When the pressure drops, you'll boil at a lower temperature causing hot spots in the water jacket that surrounds the cylinder walls and won't be able to carry away the heat.
Check with a pressure tester, it could save you some $$$ in the long run!
