coolant problems

i took out the t-stat...cause of heating issues.

well, a week has passed since then...today, i drove the car around, and i noticed it getting HOT....
checked the coolant, and there was none in the radiator...

what happens is that the car runs fine, but when i turn off the car, ALL the coolant pukes out of the reserve...emptying the radiator...HELP!!!

Are you saying that you don't have a thermostat? If so, put it back in or go get a 160* stat. I think with the way the coolant flows it will just pop your cap and push coolant to the resevior. Other things like taking the whole stat out and not gutting it can do that or you just need a new cap.

First of all,you need to put your t-stat back in.Are your fans working?Have a leak? There is only so much that can go weong with a cooling system.Worst thing is a blown head gasket, plugged radiator, debri in front of radiator..etc.tell me the problem you were having.

well, it started a month ago...it was heating up, and i didnt know why. so, we flushed the radiator...t-stat was new.

we pulled out the t-stat. figured it was bad, and left it out. it was fine after that.

3 weeks later. last night it started heating up FAST!! i pulled over. checked the coolant, and there was none...cause all of it had been pushed out of the resevoir.

i filled it up again, and drove it for 30 mins...it was FINE.

then, when i stopped and turned off the car, i noticed A LOT of water just coming out of the resevoir.

it seems that when the car is running, the coolant stays, but when it's shut off, it starts spewing it out.

EDIT: no leak...i check often for leaks, and there is no water dripping.

the fans do come on. there's NO COOLANT IN THE OIL. there's no water in the exhaust.

EDIT: what i dont get is WHY this happens every now and then, and NOT ALL THE TIME???

hope this helps

hey man i had the same cooling probs/symptoms as u, i replaced everything but the radiator! i had the same prob. with the coolant boiling out of the resivoir, but no signs of chocolate milk, so i decided what the hell i'll do a head gasket job to see if that fixes it, as time when on and i got to taring the thing apart i noticed little things like the rocker arms and pushrods had oil on them but it seem a little bit "liquidy", but again when i drained the oile, no signs of oil and coolant mixing, well i pulled off that driverside head and guess what???? water in some of the cylinders! (i was like flippin out) so ur symptoms sound very much like what i had, and if u try everything and nothin seems to work u need to pull those heads off, cuz the longer u drive that thing like that the more susseptable u are to longterm engine damage...Good Luck!

did your car only overflow SOMETIMES? and would it cool down after you filled up the coolant again?

mine was fine for 3 weeks...if it was the head gasket, wouldnt it be more predictable?

i bought a new rad cap, and i'm gonna try that, see if it heats up...if it does, then prolly, radiator is next...then, the heads.

oh yeah, since there was coolant on ur pistons, did that ruin them? this is a BRAND NEW motor, so i hope nothing is FUBAR in it.

i changed the rad cap, and so far, so good...i let it sit for 30 mins, and it went to 180 and stayed there...

well, i hope it stays like this...i REALLY hope it was the cap, cause if it's the head gasket, the car's goin to sit for a year...no more money.
