Coolant flush
 

Nothing is wrong with my cooling(ant) but i would like to do a complete flush and fill just for piece of mind..can someone point me to a step by step process of how to do a good flush and fill. thanks

Go to your auto parts store and go to the section with all the fuel additives, oil additives, etc. and you should be able to spot a bottle of coolant flush of some sort. I believe you add it to the coolant and run it through you system for like 10-15 minutes and then start your flushing and filling.

thanks for the replies..i have gotten all my questions answered elsewhere cept for this one question..is it ok to only open the knock sensor on the block to drain and flush the block? bc i cant get to the block coolant screw on the drivers side..is just the knock sensor sufficient enough? thanks

There will be a certain amount of coolant that will not drain out unless you pull that plug. If you open everything else up and flush fresh water in, it will eventually be diluted and most or all removed.

You should remove both the knock sensor and the drain plug on the driver's side...coolant will come out of both. The motor mount bolt may be in the way of the driver's side drain bolt...you can remove the motor mount bolt to get to it.

thanks shoebox..i am following your write up as well as running a flush through the system prior..i am going to take off the thermo and flush the block with a hose so if i do this will it get everything even if the block coolant screw is not opened?

i cant get at the block coolant screw the y pipe is in the way and its a pita to get off and on :mad:

If you run a stream in and let it run out somewhere else, eventually it will be diluted and flushed of nearly all old coolant.

ok here is what i plan on doing..i dont want to (and am not) open either plug on the block but want to flush the block as well..tell me if this is ok..

1. empty radiator via petcock pour in 2 bottles of prestone flush and fill rest of radiator with water. Run engine round town for 10 min at oper. temp

2. let cool and drain petcock again. take off thermo and reattach housing. run a hose into the radiator cap with engine running and petcock open untill petcock shoots straight water.

3. turn off engine and let petcock drain..reattach thermo..so now the block is filled with just tap water from my hose and the radiator is empty...fill radiator with dexcool..start engine and they will mix

do you think the amount of water that is filled in the block is equal to the amount of dexcool the radiator will be filled with? will it be around a 50/50 mixture? does all this sound ok?

can i get all the green coolant out of the entire system by having the thermo out and running a hose in the radiator cap while having only the radiator petcock open and the engine running with the intake and MAF disconnected?...then coouldnt i just take away the hose and run the car until virtually all liquid is gone(watching the temp of course)?

oops btw i need all the green coolant out bc prestone only makes yellow and orange(dexcool) now and i am putting in the dexcool and we all no they dont mix
